Sabedoria para o Crescimento Pessoal

À  LUZ  DO  MUSSÁR

Shabat Shalom a Todos!

SF - How to View Yourself in a Positive Light \ The Wisdom of Our Sages

How to View Yourself in a Positive Light \ The Wisdom of Sages

D'var Torah: "Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakai said to his students, "'What is the good path that man should folllow?' Rabbi Eliezer said, 'A good eye." (Avot 2:13) Just as we must look at our friend with "a good eye," so too, we must look at ourselves  with a "good eye." In light of knowing our imperfections and character flaws, how do we keep a positive focus when viewing ourselves? We might think that recognizing our shortcomings brings us to know the truth of ourselves. However, the flaws of our personality are the influences of our material aspect, which is external to our essence. Therefore, our flaws are not the truth of who we are. Our essence is our holy and pure soul that HaShem created and instilled within us. The truthful way to view ourselves is to see ourselves as a being of pure goodness. We use our inherent goodness, to look within and cleanse our hearts from the influence of our negative influences. In this way, we learn to define ourselves by the truth of our essence, our good and holy soul.

Moral: The true view of man, both ourselves and others, is to know, unequivocally that man's essence is eternally good and holy.

Application: Envision a stalk of wheat. It contains kernels of wheat that will be transformed into bread, the staff of life. Connected to the wheat is a bit of inedible chaff. It is easily removed by tossing the wheat into the wind. The wind carries away the chaff and reveals the perfect stalk of wheat. So too, just as soon as you view yourself as a pure and holy soul, your external flaws will immediately fly away in the winds of truth.

SF - The Amazing Power of the Creator \ Duties of the Heart

The Amazing Power of the Creator \ Duties of the Heart

D'var Torah: "By the word of HaShem were the heavens made; and all the hosts of them by the breath of His mouth" (Tehillim 33:6). We marvel at the architecture of the ancients, such as the Egyptian pyramids. These engineering wonders reflect the physical strength and refined souls of the builders, who made such grand and elaborate structures.  If this architecture is so wondrous in our eyes, how much more so, should we marvel at the infinite greatness of HaShem, who created heaven and earth and all of the inhabitants. The Creator created the entire universe without effort or exertion, labor or fatigue, out of nothing, solely by His will and desire.

Moral: We are amazed at the architectural accomplishments of ancient man, even though our building skills are almost adept as theirs. How much more so, are we required to increase our amazement and awe of the infinitely great Creator of heaven and earth.

Application: Contemplate on the sun, moon and infinite stars of heaven; and their constant movements and perfect orbits. Consider the earth, oceans, trees, grass, animals, birds, fish, and man. Be amazed and awed at the wisdom, power, and goodness of the Creator of the universe.

SF - The Supreme Value of Friendship \ The Proverbs of King Solomon

The Supreme Value of Friendship \ The Proverbs of King Solomon

D'var Torah: "One who disgraces his friend lacks a heart, whereas a person who has  understanding will keep silent" (Proverbs 11:12).  The heart is the source of understanding. Therefore, a person who does not realize the consequence of disgracing his friend, is called one who "lacks a heart." One who disgraces his good friend, "lacks a heart" because he doesn't understand the precious value of a good friend. Moreover, he doesn't grasp that if he belittles his friend, his friend will eventually pay him back in kind. Even worse, he doesn't realize that he is turning a faithful friend, into an enemy. Whereas, a man of understanding realizes the consequences of disgracing his friend, and will never do so. A  man of understanding will keep silent if his friend offends him. Indeed, a man of understanding will even keep silent if he is belittled by someone who is not his friend.

Moral:  A person who humiliates his friend is ignorant of the value of friendship, as well as the consequences of his foolishness. A man of understanding knows that silence is the best medicine for every insult.

Application: Reflect on your family members and friends. Strengthen your appreciation for their love, help, and companionship. Make a commitment to yourself to never insult or belittle them, and preserve your invaluable relationships with your loved ones. Always recognize the wisdom of remaining  silent in the face of offence.
