SF - The Spiritual Significance of Speech

"And Avraham built an altar and called out to the Name of HaShem” (Bereishis 12:4). Humankind is created in the image of HaShem. Just as HaShem has intelligence and the faculty of speech, so too, human beings possess intelligence and the power of speech. The correlation between intelligence and speech allows us to express our thoughts into words. On a deeper level, HaShem endowed us with the gift of speech so that we have the opportunity to pray! We find that Avraham Avinu often “called out to HaShem.” We are fortunate to know HaShem through the legacy that we received from Avraham Avinu, who was the first person to recognize HaShem. Viability is not the only reason that intelligence and speech is found in humans. In the spiritual realm, intelligence gives us the insight to recognize HaShem, and speech give us the opportunity to cry out to HaShem whenever we need His help, love, or counsel.

Prayer is the synthesis of intelligence and speech. Through our intelligence we attain the awareness of HaShem, and through our speech we call out to HaShem to deliver us from all our troubles.

Reflect on the verse, "And Avraham built an altar and called out to the Name of HaShem.” Envision Avraham Avinu contemplating on HaShem, Creator of heaven and earth. As he journeys through Eretz Yisrael, Avraham Avinu pauses at certain locations and offers heartfelt prayers to HaShem. Think about the inimitable power and holiness of HaShem. Seize the opportunity to pray to HaShem for all of your needs and thank Him for the unbounded goodness that He constantly showers upon you.

SF - Yarzeit of Rabbi Yoseph Zundel

Rabbi Yoseph Zundel was the Rabbi and mentor of Rabbi Yisrael Salanter. Rabbi Zundel, one of the primary disciples of Rabbi Chaim Voloshin, was known for his brilliant Torah mind, piety, and kindness. He was able to hide his greatness through his humility, and those who did not know him assumed that he was a simple peasant. Once, Rabbi Zundel was traveling by horse and wagon with a few other passengers. They took him for a simpleton. They mocked him the entire journey and even singed his beard when he took a nap. Rabbi Zundel did not respond to any of their abusive remarks. A few weeks later, they happened to see him speaking to one of the great Rabbis. They asked someone why the Rabbi was engaged in conversation with a peasant? "He is no simpleton! He is Rabbi Yoseph Zundel, one of the most eminent tzadikim of our times," he replied. The men were mortified that they had ridiculed the esteemed Rabbi. They quickly approached him and begged forgiveness. Rabbi Yoseph Zundel replied, "I will forgive you on the condition that you never make fun of another human being for the rest of your lives."

We learn three powerful lessons of character from Rabbi Yoseph Zundel. Firstly, the virtue of keeping silent in the face of insult. Secondly, showing mercy by being quick to forgive. Lastly, never making fun of another person.

Envision the holy countenance and the sweet character of Rabbi Yoseph Zundel. Integrate the three character traits into your heart and practice them in the appropriate situations. Receive HaShem's blessings and compassion for your excellent virtues
May the souls who left this world be remembered for a blessing.
