SF - Four Expressions of Redemption

"Therefore say to the Children of Israel, 'I am HaShem, and I shall release you from under the burdens of Egypt, and I shall rescue you from their bondage, and I shall redeem you with an outstretched arm....and I shall take you to Me for a people'" (Shemot 6:6). The four expressions of redemption: "release, rescue, redeem, take," correspond to the four primordial elements: fire, air, water, and earth. This signifies that spiritual redemption requires redemption from the influence of the material elements. The most important material redemption is the redemption from air. Air refers to speech which is powered by air. In this light, the redemption from air encompasses the purification of all improper speech. Fire and water, refer to the attainment of the awe and love of HaShem, respectively, which is rooted in the heart and mind. Earth refers to the rectification of our deeds. HaShem awakened our redemption from Egypt by freeing us from the influence of the four material elements.

Our efforts to correct our speech, attain the awe and love of HaShem, and uplift our deeds, holds the power to awaken the redemption.

Application: Set aside a few minutes each day to think about self-improvement. Focus on purifying your0 speech, elevating your thoughts through attaining the awe and love of HaShem, and uplift your deeds. Team up with a friend and discuss together strategies for improvement. Be inspired by knowing that your efforts to improve, will help to bring the redemption.

SF - Three Lessons of Faith From Shemah Yisrael

Judaism rests on three pillars: the knowledge of HaShem's existence, the awareness that the Torah is from Heaven, and the belief in future consequences of our deeds. These principles are alluded to in the three paragraphs of the Shema that we recite twice a day. The first paragraph contains the declaration of faith in the existence of HaShem and His unity: "Hear O Israel HaShem is Elokenu HaShem is One." The second paragraph expresses that the Torah was given to us from HaShem: "These are the Mitzvos that I command you today." The third paragraph reveals the concept of reward and punishment for man's actions: Klal Yisrael was rewarded for their faith in HaShem with the miraculous redemption from Egypt, while the Egyptians were punished for refusing to comply with HaShem's will to free Klal Yisrael.

The awareness of these three principles helps us to grasp the essence of Torah and strengthen our commitment to serve HaShem both in thought and deed.

Reflect on the three principles of faith when you recite the Shema:
1) The existence of HaShem, 2) Torah is from Heaven, 3) Reward and punishment. By reviewing these primary principles on a daily basis, you will strengthen your faith in HaShem, improve your Torah observance, and be inspired to do good deeds.

SF - The Compassion of HaShem

When Pharaoh refused to comply with HaShem's demand to free Klal Yisrael, HaShem responded with ten plagues. In the first plague, Hashem turned the Egyptian waters to blood. HaShem's purpose was to rebuke the Egyptians for denying the existence of HaShem and worshipping the Nile. By turning the water to blood, HaShem clearly demonstrated to them that He was the all-powerful, Eternal Creator. Moreover, by turning the water to blood, HaShem revealed His great mercy to Pharaoh. HaShem hinted to Pharaoh, "If I turned the object that you worship into blood, surely I should have - and could have - punished you! For you are an idol worshipper and you lead your people astray. Nevertheless, I act with mercy towards you, sparing your life and hoping that you will understand and repent."

Even though HaShem has unlimited power and mastery over all of His creations, He is not quick to punish those who rebel against Him. He first acts with compassion, hoping that the wayward people will be moved to recognize HaShem and improve their ways.

Envision the Nile River and all the waters in Egypt have turned into blood. Imagine how this event shocks the Egyptians. See them all scrambling to find water, but to no avail. How many amongst them realize the true significance of this phenomenon? Reflect on the challenges in your life. Recognize HaShem's compassion and contemplate on the messages that HaShem is communicating through these events. Make the relevant corrections and turn the darkness into light.
