SF - The Uniqueness of the Eternal King \ Adon Olam

The Uniqueness of the Eternal King \ Adon Olam
"HaShem is King by nature of His very essence."
D'var Torah: "The Master of the universe, Who reigned before anything was created" (Adon HaOlam \ Siddur) Our Sages tell us, "There can be no king without a people." Meaning, whom does a king reign over if there are no subjects to rule? In light of this, what is the explanation of the phrase, "HaShem reigned as King before anything was created?" There is a fundamental difference between an earthly king in contrast to HaShem. The kingship of a human king depends on imposing his authority to rule over his subjects. Whereas, HaShem's Kingship is not dependent upon the subjugation of His creations. HaShem is King by nature of His very essence. Regardless of whether or not His creations exist, HaShem alone is the only true King.

Moral: HaShem was King before He created the world. HaShem is the King, Who created the universe and reigns eternally supreme over all of His creations.

Application: Reflect on the verse: "The Master of the universe, Who reigned before anything was created." Sing the verse to yourself intending to integrate its meaning into your heart. Sense the awe of standing in the presence of the Eternal King. Rejoice in knowing the holiness, wisdom, power, and kindness of the "Master of the Universe."

SF - Healing Words \ Parashat Vayigash

Healing Words \ Parashat Vayigash
"Even though Yoseph had good reason to criticize and condemn his brothers, he was careful to avoid any offensive or hurtful words."
D'var Torah: Many years after being sold as a slave by his brothers, Yoseph encounters his brothers in Egypt. Amazingly, Yoseph emerged as the ruler of the country. Yoseph recognized his brothers, but they did not recognize that Yoseph, the Egyptian monarch, was their brother. Yoseph utilizes the situation to stir his brothers to acknowledge their wrongdoing. At the climax of this compelling emotional drama, Yoseph cries out to his brothers, "I am Yoseph. Is my father still alive?" With these few words, Yoseph reveals himself to his brothers. He did not scold nor confront his brothers. Nor did he scream at them, or try to make them feel guilty. He simply told them the fact that he was Yoseph. They intuitively understood the liability of their actions. Even though Yoseph had good reason to criticize and condemn his brothers, he was careful to avoid any offensive or hurtful words.

Moral: Yoseph's gentle approach is the Torah model of all reproof. When one person rebukes another, it is inappropriate to say any accusing, inflammatory, or hurtful words. Admonishment is not an excuse to unleash cruelty or anger. In light of this, concerning rebuke, the Torah states (Vayikra 19:17), "Do not bear a sin." That is, when offering criticism, do not embarrass or hurt the person you are advising.

Application: Always choose to communicate with pleasant and positive words. Refrain from expressing inflamatory words and do not engage in any negative criticism. If you must correct your friend, think very carefully of the gentlest way to convey your message. Approach your friend in privacy, and with high sensitivity and compassion.

SF - The Catalyst of Deliverance \ Parashat Meikeitz

The Catalyst of Deliverance \ Parashat Meikeitz
"HaShem lives, and blessed is my Rock, and HaShem raises my deliverance on high."
D'var Torah: "HaShem lives, and blessed is my Rock, and HaShem raises my deliverance on high" (Tehilim 18:47). The Zohar cites this verse to shed light on Yoseph's remarkable release from the Egyptian dungeon of the chief executioner. "HaShem lives" refers to Yoseph's pure heart, cleansed of all material pleasures. He attaches himself to the Eternal Life of Torah and Mitzvot. "Blessed is my Rock" expresses that Yoseph attained the clarity of wisdom that HaShem is the Source of all goodness. "HaShem raises my deliverance on high" reveals that as a merit for his devotion to holiness, and his clear recognition of HaShem's kindness, HaShem performed wondrous miracles that freed Yoseph from imprisonment. After two additional years in jail, Yoseph attained absolute devotion to HaShem and clarity of trust in HaShem. As a result, "At the end of two years," Yoseph merited HaShem's wonderful salvation: "So Pharoah rushed and summoned Yoseph, and they rushed him from the dungeon."

Moral: The attachment to Eternal Life and the clear recognition that HaShem is the Source of all goodness, are the catalysts that awaken HaShem's miraculous redemption.

Application: Reflect on the verse: "HaShem lives, and blessed is my Rock, and HaShem raises my deliverance on high." Sing the verse to yourself a few times, intending to internalize its concepts. Detach from the temporal pursuits of this world and attach yourself to Eternal Life of Torah and Mitzvot. Strengthen your belief in HaShem and trust that He is the Source of Goodness. Merit HaShem's most miraculous deliverance!
