The Wisdom of Peace

A few of the tribes -- Gad, Reuven, and Menashe -- requested to settle in grazing lands right over the border of Israel. Moshe granted their request on the condition that they join their brethren in the war to conquer Israel. However, it is surprising that Moshe did not admonish them for choosing to live outside of the Holy Land! It is especially hard to understand, in light of Moshe's great love and yearning for Eretz Yisrael. The answer is that Moshe sensed if he denied their request to settle in the fertile grazing lands, they would start to dispute with Moshe. Therefore, in the name of peace, Moshe acquiesced to their request, even though it was an improper choice.

Lesson: It takes great wisdom and restraint to keep silent, in order to avoid conflict and dissension -- and keep the peace.
(Based on the commentary of the Seforno to the Torah)
