SF - The Holiness of Charity \ Parashat Terumah

SF - The Holiness of Charity \ Parashat Terumah
D'var Torah: "HaShem spoke to Moshe saying, 'Speak to the Children of Israel and have them take for Me an offering; from every person whose heart inspires him to generosity'" (Shemot 25:1). After HaShem gave the Torah to Klal Yisrael, He also wanted His Shechinah to dwell amongst them. This wonder requires a clean and pure sanctuary, that is a fitting place for the holy Shechinah. In order for every member of Klal Yisrael to collectively merit in this Beit HaMikdash, HaShem instructed Moshe to receive a free will offering from every person of the Children of Israel. Moreover, the Beit HaMikdash alludes to the body, for it was constructed by means of the good deeds of Klal Yisrael. While the Shechinah alludes to the soul which permeates throughout the entire body with holiness.

Moral: The collective, spontaneous generosity and kindness of the Children of Israel, created the holiness and purity necessary for the dwelling of the holy Shechinah amongst us.

Application: Be inspired to give charity, and keep in mind that charity evokes a double goodness. (1) It provides help for those in need. (2) It elevates and purifies the giver. (3) Reflect on the fact that the one who gives charity is fitting for the dwelling of the holy Shechinah. (4) After you give charity, sense the closeness of the Shechinah.
