Our Sacred Souls

"And all the flesh that moves on the earth perished -- among the birds, the animals, the beasts, and all the creeping things... and all humankind" (Bereicheit 7:21).

It is interesting to note that the Torah also uses the word "perished" for the passing of our Holy Patriarchs. For instance, regarding Avraham, Scripture writes, "And Avraham perished and died at a good old age..." (Bereicheit 25:8. Concerning Yaacov, it says, "He perished and was gathered to his people" (Bereicheit 49:33).

Why does the Torah use the same language for the righteous as well as the corrupt?

HaShem knew that the corrupt generation who perished in the flood had Holy Souls! They had the same potential for spiritual attainment as our ancient Forefathers and Matriarchs.

For example, King David was born with a rugged nature. Yet, he tapped into his sacred soul and mastered his temperament. HaShem chose him to be the king of Israel and blessed him with prophecy. King David's kindness, trust in HaShem, and humility reached the ultimate levels of excellence.

May we recognize the preciousness of our holy soul and elevate ourselves to higher and higher levels of goodness.
