| HaShem created us with the holy letters of the Hebrew alphabet. These sacred letters are the “spiritual molecules” from which our very being is formed. When a person sins, some of those letters are released from the part of the body involved in the sin. In their place, a ruach tumah — a spirit of impurity — enters and takes hold.
The Vidui — the confessional prayer we recite on Yom Kippur — is written as an acrostic, following the order of the Hebrew alphabet. With each word of confession, we mention a sin or misdeed associated with one of those letters. And then something wondrous occurs. As we articulate each word with genuine regret and heartfelt remorse, the impurity departs — and the holy letters return. They restore sanctity, purity, and spiritual vitality to the very limbs and organs from which they were expelled.
On Yom Kippur, through the holy process of teshuvah (repentance), HaShem cleanses our hearts and souls. He recreates us — and the entire world — anew, illuminating creation with the original light of the “Seven Days of Creation.” May we rejoice and thank HaShem for this day of renewal, holiness, compassion, and spiritual liberation.
Today: As you pray on Yom Kippur, know that HaShem is actively restoring those holy letters within you. (Based on Nefesh HaChaim)
