SF - Israel Is Youthful and I Love Him

"And I will take from you twelve men" (Devarim 1:23). The twelve spies who Moshe Rabenu appointed to spy out the Land of Israel, were from amongst the generation's highest level of spirituality. Despite their greatness and the open miracles that they witnessed, most of the spies failed in their mission. What happened to cause such a disaster? The spies rested on their laurels and stopped growing; they had become static! Whereas, Yehoshuah and Calev, the two spies who succeeded fulfilled the verse, "For Yisrael is youthful and I love him" (Hosheah 11). In the generation of Hosheah, HaShem praised Klal Yisrael because they had great enthusiasm, as if they had just started to learn Torah. So too, Yehoshuah and Calev were charged with excitement and enthusiasm, as if they were just now beginning to know HaShem and His love for Klal Yisrael.

The greatest danger to spiritual well-being is apathy and nonchalance. Conversely, enthusiasm and eagerness are the life force of spiritual vibrancy.

Envision Yehoshuah learning Torah with great excitement when he was young. See how his enthusiasm stays alive and vibrant when he becomes an adult and even in his elderly years. Imagine how his fiery vigor, gave him the strength to pass the test of the spies. Awaken your heart and soul with joy, vitality, and passion for HaShem and His Torah.

SF - Tomer Devorah - The Joy of Repentance - Day One

BS”D

Menachem Av 5782

Dear Friends,

Shalom Aleichem!

Hoping you and your family are well!

The Salant Foundation has prepared a book based on Tomer Devorah, the section on Binah. It is entitled “The Joy of Teshuvah,” and divided into fifty readings.

In light of the fact that we have approximately fifty days to Yom Kippur, we will present the book in our daily emails.

We will send our regular email at 11 PM EDT and “The Joy of Teshuvah” at 7 AM EDT.

We hope you will enjoy our publication and we welcome your comments!

Warmest blessings,

Zvi Miller

Day One

Preface

They asked the Holy One, May He be Blessed, ‘What is the fate of a sinner?’ He answered, יעשו תשובה ויתכפר לו, ‘Let him perform repentance and it will atone for him,’ as it says (Tehillim 25:8), ‘Good and upright is HaShem, therefore he shows sinners the way’ — He shows them the path to perform repentance. (Yerushalmi Makos 7a)

We accept Teshuvah — Repentance — as a basic premise of the Torah. However, the concept of Teshuvah is counterintuitive! If we committed a misdeed, how can we uproot it from reality?

The Seven Clouds of Glory that surrounded Klal Yisrael (the Jewish People) in the Wilderness are the same Clouds that surround HaShem’s Throne of Glory. Because of this, we were graced with Divine Sanctity in the Wilderness. These Clouds of Glory are open and accessible for Teshuvah (Repentance) and Tefillah (Prayer) to rise through them, as the Talmud teaches (Yoma 86b): “Teshuvah ascends to the Throne of Glory.” When Klal Yisrael transgresses the Divine Will, the Clouds of Glory transform themselves into a structure similar to a ‘sukah.’ The pure souls of Israel are rooted in the Throne of Glory, which thoroughly purifies them (cf. Kad HaKemach, “Sukah” 49b).

This teaching of the Kad HaKemach is mystifying, to say the least. Why do the Clouds of Glory form into a “sukah” even before Klal Yisrael engages in Teshuvah? The Merciful One knows that the sensitive souls of Klal Yisrael will be remorseful when they transgress and quickly respond with Teshuvah. Therefore, He anticipates their reaction and forms the Clouds into a “sukah.”

Yet, what is the connection between the Clouds of Glory being receptive to Teshuvah on one hand, and forming into a “sukah,” on the other?

The awareness that our Teshuvah ascends to the very Throne of Glory – which requires us to turn to the One Who sits there when seeking forgiveness – may be unsettling and even overwhelming! This is especially so when one recognizes his flaws, thinking, “How can I ask the King of the Universe for forgiveness when I acted so brazenly?”

Responding in kind to our humility and contrite spirit, HaShem mercifully forms the Clouds of Glory into a “sukah” – a humble and unimposing abode. He welcomes every remorseful soul into His Presence — His very Home — as it says in our Prayers, “For your Right Hand is open to receive penitents.”

The practical takeaway from this passage is that when we engage in Teshuvah, the Merciful One immediately awakens His Divine Attribute of Compassion and accepts us into His humble “sukah.” As we ascend to the holy roots of our souls, the Creator thoroughly cleanses us with His purifying waters.
May the souls who left this world be remembered for a blessing.

SF - Who Is Compassionate Like G-d?

“Who is a G-d like You?" (Michah 7:18). HaShem is aware of all of our actions, thoughts, and intentions. In addition, HaShem grants us the gift of life and the power of movement every second of our existence. When a person commits a misdeed, he is misusing HaShem's gift of life. His inappropriate action causes great offence to HaShem. Indeed, the Master of the Universe, has the power to immediately withdraw the gift of life, in order to stop the person from acting against the Divine will. Nevertheless, in His infinite compassion, HaShem mercifully bears the offence and continues to bestow the blessing of life upon this person. In light of this, the Prophet declared, "Who is a G-d like You?" No other king, would be so tolerant of such outright defiance. Only HaShem in His infinite mercy for man, tolerates our indiscretions and patiently waits for us to return to the path of goodness.

HaShem's compassion for man is astonishing! Every time we disrespect His gift of life, HaShem mercifully bears the insult, and continues to grant us life. Even more, with His infinite patience, He awaits our repentance.

Emulate HaShem's compassion by tolerating offence in your interpersonal relationships. Bear insult the best you can and continue to act kindly to your friends or loved ones. Patiently wait and hope that those people who have caused you distress, will eventually make amends. Rejoice in knowing that just as you show compassion to others, so too, HaShem will show compassion to you.

SF - Be Clean With HaShem

"You shall be clean with HaShem and clean with Israel" (Bamidbar 32:22). This verse urges us to conduct all of our dealings with integrity. The Midrash records an incident that illustrates this ideal. Abba Tachanah Chassidah, a great Sage, approached the city gates on Friday afternoon just before sunset. Suddenly, he came upon a sick man lying in the road. The man said, "Please, Rabbi do me a favor and carry me into the city." Abba Tachanah Chassidah thought to himself, If I leave my  groceries here, how will I provide for my family? Yet, if I leave this poor man, I will be accountable for his life. He put down his groceries and carried the helpless man into the city. He then ran back to retrieve his packages just as the last rays of sun were fading. He feared that perhaps he had desecrated Shabbos. HaShem caused the sun to shine a little longer, and a voice from Heaven proclaimed, "Your deeds were performed correctly, and you will receive your just reward in the World to Come."

When we are faced with a moral dilemma, the Torah gives us the resolve to overcome our inner struggle and do the right thing. HaShem will ultimately bless our efforts in this world, as well as the eternal World to Come.

(1) When you are faced with a moral conflict, remember that even Abba Tachanah Chassida had to struggle with himself to do the right thing. (2) Weigh the two options facing you and decide what is the right and moral thing to do. (3) Reflect on the verse, ""You shall be clean with HaShem and clean with Israel." (4) Be encouraged and do the right thing. (5) Trust that HaShem will bless you for your action in this world as well as the World to Come.
