SF -- Chanukah - Revelation of HaShem's Uncontional Love

The Rambam writes, “The Mitzvah of lighting the Chanukah lights is a very beloved Mitzvah.” In light of the fact that the Rambam does not say this regarding any other Mitzvah, it is imperative to unearth the unique quality of kindling the Chanukah Menorah. The Torah tells us that Klal Yisrael enjoys the status of HaShem loving us as His very children. The Talmud raises the question: does HaShem loves us as His children only when we are complicit with the Torah? Or does HaShem love us unconditionally; I.e., regardless of whether or not we uphold the Torah? The Talmud concludes that HaShem does in fact love Klal Yisrael unequivocally, even if we stray far from His path. During the time of the Greeks, most of Klal Yisrael fell to the influence of the pagan Greeks, and remained unrepentant. A minority of Klal Yisrael, lead by the Chashmonayim, held valiantly to Torah dedication. Even though a great number amongst Klal Yisrael rebelled against HaShem, HaShem revealed His unconditional love for us by performing the great miracles of Chanukah. The revelation of HaShem’s unequivocal love for Klal Yisrael, makes the observance of Chanukah especially beloved to the Jewish People.

Just as parents love their children unconditionally, HaShem, the Merciful Father of Klal Yisrael loves us unconditionally.

As you kindle the Chanukah lights contemplate on HaShem’s unconditional love for Klal Yisrael. Reflect on the amazing miracles that HaShem performed for Klal Yisrael even though the majority of people were steeped in heathen practices. Close your eyes and open your heart to feel the unabated love and compassion that HaShem holds for you. Rejoice in receiving HaShem’s unequivocal love every second of your existence.
