The Secret of the Holy Vessels
The holy vessels of the Mishkan reveal deep secrets about life. For example, two Cheruvim (angel-like golden figures) were affixed to the Ark of the Covenant. They faced each other and their heads looked downwards towards the cover of the Ark, However, in the event that Klal Yisrael was not pleasing to HaShem, the Cheruvim miraculously turned around and faced away from each other. The Cheruvim facing each other, symbolized Klal Yisrael's concern for each other's well-being. When the Cheruvim turned around, it was a sign that Klal Yisrael fell short in caring for their fellow man.
Lesson: The primary criteria of finding favor in the eyes of HaShem is relinquishing self-interest, and focusing on loving our family members and friends.
Visualization: Envision the Cheruvim facing each other in the Holy of Holies. Take a few minutes to reflect on your friends and pay attention to their needs and concerns, Fill your heart with love, kindness, and care for your fellow man -- and be pleasing in the eyes of HaShem.

Once, Rabbi Yisrael Salanter's student approached him and said, "If I had the mind of a genius, the heart of a saint, and outstanding character traits -- then, I could become a great Rabbi."
Rabbi Yisrael responded, "With your mind, your heart, and your character traits you can become a great Rabbi!"
Rabbi Yisrael dedicated his life to encourage people to strive for personal excellence. To this end he launched the Mussar Movement, providing guidance, techniques, and wisdom on how to develop good and pleasant character traits.
He had tremendous impact on the world and his message resonates today just as clearly as it did one hundred and fifty years ago.
