The Greatest Innovation
After the flood, Avraham Avinu met Noah's son, Shem, and asked him, "On what merit were you spared from the flood?" Shem responded, "On the merit of our kindness in feeding and caring for the animals in the ark." Avraham concluded, "The merit of kindness to the animals spared them from destruction. Therefore, if I will act with kindness to my fellow man, how much more so will HaShem protect me from all troubles." Immediately, he started providing food for travelers.
Lesson: Our Patriarch, Avraham Avinu, instituted the ideal and practice of interpersonal loving kindness. It was the greatest innovation in the history of the world.
