The Hallmark of Loving-Kindness
Eliezer arrived at the well and prayed, "May the girl who agrees to give me water and also offer to draw water for the camels be the destined wife of Yitzchak." Before he finished his prayer, Rivka came to the well. She consented to provide water for Eliezer, and also volunteered to draw water for his camels. Eliezer gave her the gold jewelry that Avraham sent for Yitzchak's wife. Yet, how could he be sure that she was the destined wife for Yitzchak, before verifying that she was from Avraham's lineage? Rivka's loving-kindness emanated from the root of her heart and soul. She went beyond herself in order to help others, even volunteering to water the camels. Eliezer recognized that Rivka had the same total dedication to loving-kindness, that he saw in Avraham Avinu, the consummate master of loving-kindness. Therefore, Eliezer knew from the uniqueness of Rivka's exceptional loving-kindness, she was unquestionably the fitting soul mate for Yitzchak. Lesson: Rivka's loving-kindness sprung from her dedication to serve others. She demonstrated persistence to complete the kindness, no matter how great the challenge. App: Reflect on Rivka's total dedication to provide water for Eliezer and to offer to provide for his camels. Be inspired to help others with heartfelt loving kindness. Strive to deliver your your acts of kindness with sincerity, effectiveness, and joy. (Based on Rashi and Da'as Chocham U'Mussar) to view the Salant Mussar Library Collection |
