The Secret of Overcoming the Ego In order to rescue Lot, Avraham Avinu defeated four allied kingdoms. Subsequently, while Avraham was traveling into Gerar, Sarah, his wife was taken captive by the king, Avimelech. HaShem protected her and miraculously rescued her from trouble. Yet, since he was renown as an invincible military power, who would have the audacity to take his wife? The answer is that despite his great accomplishments, Avraham remained exceedingly humble. He traveled through the wilderness without fanfare and presented himself as a simple traveler. Lesson: Even though Avraham was one of the most accomplished people in the history of the world, he always retained a deep sense of modesty and reserve. He was fully aware that HaShem, alone, granted him all of his attainments and success. Visualization: Envision Avraham Avinu and his deep sense of humility. Reflect that he was the first person from a pagan society to recognize the Creator. He was a Prophet, who received many communications and blessings from HaShem. He influenced the entire world to believe in HaShem and spread the ideal of loving kindness throughout the world. HaShem performed many open miracles on his behalf. See Avraham each day of his life working on character refinement. Despite his incomparable greatness, his holy personality shines with loving-kindness and humility. to view the Salant Mussar Library Collection |
