D'var Torah: “And Yaacov lived in the land of his fathers sojourning” (Bereishieis 37:1). The Torah tells the story of Yaacov and his progeny in vivid detail. In the previous chapter, the Torah recounted the generations of Esav, with no detail other than the chain of generations. The Medrash unlocks the secret of this distinction: Someone drops diamonds in the sand. He sifts the sand in a sifter. When he finds the diamonds, he discards the pebbles and collects the diamonds. The nations outnumber us and glorify themselves in their power and wealth. Nevertheless, HaShem has no real regard for the facade of importance projected by the nations. HaShem cherishes Klal Yisrael because we recognize the Creator and dedicate ourselves to the study and fulfillment of the Torah.
Lesson: Don’t be intimidated by the numbers and might of the nations. HaShem views Yaacov Avinu, his descendants, and the entire Klal Yisrael as His most precious treasure.
Application: Envision yourself as a priceless diamond cherished by HaShem. Imagine HaShem looking at you with unbounded affection. Hear HaShem say, “You are My most precious diamond.”
