D'var Torah: "Yacov was alone when a man fought with him until the dawn. And the man saw that he could not prevail against Yaacov"(Bereishis 32:25). The "man" was Esav's guardian angel, who tried to overcome Yaacov. They had a fierce battle, but the angel was unable to defeat Yaacov. How was Yaacov able to contend with an awesomely powerful angel, who was intent on destroying him? Usually, when a person is confronted with an overwhelming challenge, his sense of optimism is diminished. He realizes that he doesn't have a fighting chance to succeed. Yaacov Avinu mastered his emotions by keeping his thoughts and his words focused on HaShem. The great confrontation did not distract Yaacov for one second from placing his heartfelt trust in HaShem. He prevailed over the angel by his relentless and continuous attachment to HaShem.
Moral: We can overcome any challenge, no matter how intense, by staying focused on HaShem. As long as we continuously trust HaShem and pray to Him, He will save us from our trials, no matter how severe they may be.
Application: Envision the angel engaging Yaacov in battle. See Yaacov immediately overcome his fear by strengthening his heart to trust in HaShem and praying to HaShem for mercy, kindness, and redemption. Whenever you are confronted with a challenge, always stay focused on HaShem and pray to Him. Strengthen your trust in HaShem that He will save you from all of your hardships.
