Five Steps to Personal Transformation \ Mesilat Yesharim
D'var Torah: One of the great challenges of the human experience is overcoming a negative behaviour pattern. Every person has shortcomings, such as, overeating, smoking, anger, or any of the many other base traits and addictions. Even when we recognize that an action is detrimental to our well-being, we find it very hard to stop habitual behavior. Why isn't clear knowledge of the harmful effects of bad habits sufficient to cure our negative patterns? The Rambam shed great light on this question, by revealing the secret of change. Yes, recognition of the problem is the first step in mastering our habits. However, due to a quirk in human nature, something else is required to help us succeed. Within man's personality is a subconscious force that fights change by causing us to forget the truth. Even though today we recognize that a certain behavior is detrimental, human nature will have us forget it tomorrow! Now that we know the root of the problem, we can formulate the solution. We counter the forgetfulness by making a conscious and consistent effort to remember the truth of the harmful effects of inappropriate behavior. By consistently reviewing the disadvantages of negative traits, we will eventually grasp the truth. We will attain the clarity and inner-strength to overcome our negative habits.
Moral: The forgetfulness of human nature is the enemy of change. Consistent review - and the awareness that it produces - is the secret ally and catalyst of personal transformation.
Application: (1) Reflect on one negative habit or trait that you would like to change. (2) Determine what is the downside of that negative behaviour. (3) Review this thought process once a day for two weeks. (3) Attain clarity of the harmful effects of this behavior. (4) Acquire the mastery over your base traits. (5) Establish positive and wholesome paths, in their stead. (Based on the commentary of Rav Yechezkel Sara and the Rambam)
The Salant Foundation is currently looking for a Shul or community to partner with us in sharing the merit of the unique and important Salant Kollel. There are practical and easy ways (such as adoptakollel.org) to create a special mutual relationship between the Kollel and a Shul or community. If you think your Shul or community or workplace might want to participate in supporting the Salant Kollel, please contact Rabbi Zvi Miller at salantorg@gmail.com, and we will discuss how to implement your idea. Thank you! |
