The Secret of Spiritual Growth
Our holy ancestors, the Patriarchs, held fast to the axiomatic tenets of being aware of HaShem and loving their fellow man. As a result of their spiritual dedication, they overcame the powers of their material body and sanctified their entire being. On the other hand, Bilam, had even greater prophecy than Moshe Rabenu. Yet, Bilam had a rotten disposition and openly rebelled against HaShem! How could a man who had such great knowledge of HaShem be so corrupted? The only way for a person, even a great prophet, to overcome human nature is to have the merit of Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaacov!
Lesson: How fortunate we are to have the merit and blessing of the Avos! Just as they purified themselves, so too, each one of us has the innate spiritual strength to overcome human nature -- and purify, sanctify, and elevate ourselves! (Based on the writings of the Saba Kadisha M'Kelm)
