A Meditation of Gratitude
HaShem created man from total non-existence to existence. HaShem did not "owe" us any favors, rather He created us out of pure kindness, compassion, and goodness. What's more, HaShem elevated man above the animals, vegetation, and inanimate objects. The more we reflect on the kindness of our Creator, the more we will be moved to joyfully thank Him and to faithfully serve Him. Lesson: Contemplation upon our existence opens our minds to realize that our presence in this world -- and our elevated status -- is miraculous. Visualization: Imagine that once you were an abandoned baby left in the street. A stranger took pity on you and brought you to his home. He fed you, clothed you, and sheltered you. He cared for you and raised you as if you were his own child. When you grow old enough to understand, you will realize that this man saved your life and acted with unbounded kindness towards you. How much more so, do we owe a debt of gratitude and service to our Creator. (Based on Duties of the Heart, Gate of Spiritual Accounting) to view the Salant Mussar Library Collection |
