SF - Please, Don't Leave Me

After celebrating seven days of Sukkoth, we celebrate an additional festival called Shemini Atzeret. Sukkoth is time of intense closeness with HaShem. When the time comes for us to separate from HaShem, He doesn't want His children to leave. So He pleads with us, "My children, please stay with Me another day. It is hard for Me to bear your leaving."

We were in the King's presence for seven days celebrating together the joys of the Sukkoth festival. The joy, the love, the holiness is so beautiful. Just as it is hard for HaShem to separate from us, it is just as difficult for us to separate from Him. Therefore, we need one more day to be in His presence, to delay our departure. We simply love Him so much that we just can't bear to leave His sweet light and pleasant blessings.

So too, the times that we separate from our loved ones are poignant and tender. The day of separation is a time to be spent together. An opportunity to express our love and admiration and to convey to our loved one just how difficult separation will be. These sensitivities are the cornerstone of relationships; building lasting and durable foundations of love, commitment, and joy.

May we be blessed with loving relationships with our fellow man and with HaShem.

SF - The Power of Forgiveness

Rabbi Akiva saw a man carrying a heavy load on his back. This man sat down to rest and fell asleep. Rabbi Akiva saw a deadly snake approaching the man, ready to bite him. Suddenly another animal sprung up and killed the snake. When the man awakened, Rabbi Akiva asked him to tell him what merit he had that made him worthy of such a miracle. The man answered, "All my life, I never bore hatred towards another person, nor did I ever bear a grudge. If a person did something hurtful to me, I would immediately forgive him. If I could not meet with him to make peace before I went to sleep, I would pray to HaShem to forgive him, even if he slandered me. When people torment me, I forgive them. What's more, I try to do good to those who harm me, even if they caused me to suffer." Rabbi Akiva wept and said, "This man is worthy of such a miracle. He truly has a good heart!"

When a person goes beyond human nature to overlook the offensive conduct of others, he will merit HaShem's miraculous protection.

Take on the goal of having a good heart. Prepare yourself never to harbor negative feelings towards another person. Be ready to forgive others immediately. Do good to those who harm you. Merit HaShem's blessings and miraculous protection.

SF - The Emergence of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai

Yochai was married for many years, yet his wife did not bear him children. He asked her to accept a divorce, so that he could marry a new wife who might bear him children. She begged him to let her try for one more year. Yochai agreed to her request.

With a broken heart and countless tears she prayed for a miracle.

One night, Yochai dreamt that he was in a forest of dry leafless trees. Each tree was watered with a cup of water and sprouted to life. Soon he came to his tree, which was next to a barrel of water. The barrel poured water on to the tree, and it blossomed with leaves and fruits.

He related the dream to a sage and asked him its meaning. The sage told him that he would have a great son who would illuminate the world. Yochai asked why the other trees had a cup, while his tree had a barrel of water. The sage answered, "The barrel of water symbolizes the copious tears of your wife."

Heartfelt prayer with many tears has the power to convert darkness to light, heal every illness, and transform hardship into joy.
May the souls who left this world be remembered for a blessing.
