A Chave para a Alegria

SF - The Fountainhead of Faith \ King David

The Fountainhead of Faith \ King David
"King David left us an invaluable legacy, a winning game-plan for life."
D'var Torah: King David met every challenge with his immutable rule, "Even if the sword is lying on your neck, do not despair from praying to HaShem and asking Him for compassion." King David left us an invaluable legacy, a winning game-plan for life. That is, to always stay optimistic by invariably trusting in HaShem with all of your strength, and finding success in His salvation. When you have a financial crisis, an illness, or a broken relationship, etc., never give up. Strengthen your trust in HaShem and turn to Him for help. HaShem is waiting for our prayers and heartfelt supplications. In the blink of an eye, HaShem will turn our darkness to light and our sorrow to joy.

Moral: King David was brave and uncompromisingly hopeful in his absolute trust in HaShem, even in the most trying moments. His faith in HaShem was the secret of his incomparable greatness, holiness, and accomplishments.

Application: Envision King David strengthening his faith in HaShem, even when the odds were against him. For instance, taking on -- and overcoming -- Goliath. Follow King David's example and turn to HaShem when the chips are down. Be irrepressible and confident that HaShem will save you and convert your darkness to light and your hardship into joy.

SF - The Excellence of Empathy \ Parashat Noah

The Excellence of Empathy \ Parashat Noah
"Caring for others is the purpose of our existence."
D'var Torah: Noah's son, Shem, explained that Noah was responsible to feed the multitude of animals gathered in the ark, as well as, to learn which food was appropriate for each species. While attending the animals, Noah found a bird called, chol, lying in the hold of the ark. "Don't you need to eat?" asked Noah. "I saw how difficult it is for you to feed all the animals, so I decided not to cause you any further trouble," answered the chol. Noah replied, "You empathize with my trouble! May you live forever!" It seems strange that a bird could have such sensitivity for Noah. We understand from this incident that an animal does have the capacity to feel the pain others. If an animal can sympathize with others, how much more so are we required to empathize with our friends!

Moral: Caring for others is the purpose of our existence. We have the capability to detect the pains and needs of our loved ones and friends. And to compassionately give them our support and kindness. Just as Noah blessed the chol with eternal life, so too, HaShem will bless us with a wonderful share in the World to Come.

Application: Reflect on the people in your life who show you kindness. Consider how they commit themselves and make sacrifices to help you. Express your appreciation to them for their goodness, and make an effort to ease their burdens. HaShem will bless you with kindness, peace, and life.

SF - The Secret of Spiritual Advancement \ Ba'al Shem Tov

The Secret of Spiritual Advancement \ Ba'al Shem Tov
"HaShem encourages us to come closer, be better, take a new step."
D'var Torah: As we ascend the path of Torah inspired values, we grow spiritually and feel the joy of drawing closer to HaShem. It might be through a Mitzvah that we perform with more meaningfulness or a new Torah insight that inspires us. Then suddenly, we are challenged, and we feel distant from HaShem. We are perplexed. The following metaphor uncovers the mystery of this dilemma. When a parent coaxes their baby to walk, they stand in front of their child and encourage him to take a step. When he takes a step, the parent steps backward, motivating the child to take another step. So too, we take a step closer to HaShem, and we feel optimistic. HaShem "takes a step backward" to encourage us to take another step forward!

Moral: HaShem encourages us to come closer, be better, take a new step. When we go forward, HaShem never abandons us! He moves back so that we will grow a little stronger and advance.

Application: Envision Avraham Avinu living in a pagan society. He seeks the truth and recognizes HaShem. Avraham passes ten tests, growing continuously stronger and closer to HaShem. Strengthen your faith that HaShem is always beside you. Take another step, and HaShem will guide you to new levels of wisdom, kindness, and holiness.
