SF - The Joy of Klal Yisrael!

The revelation of the Shechinah (the Divine Presence) that dwelt in the Mishkan, was the same revelation of the Shechinah that Klal Yisrael experienced at Mount Sinai. In this light, HaShem spoke to Moshe in the Mishkan with the same awesome voice and revealed the same glowing holiness that Moshe perceived at Mount Sinai. What was the merit of Klal Yisrael that awakened this supreme holiness and closeness to HaShem in the Mishkan? The verse states (Shemos 25:2), "Speak to the Children of Israel, and have them bring an offering for me, from every person whose heart inspires him, you shall take My offering." They voluntarily brought their offerings of gold and silver to build the Mishkan, as per the verse, "from every person whose heart inspires him..." Their heartfelt inspiration to bring their
offerings to build the Mishkan, awakened the glory of the Shechinah of Mount Sinai to dwell in the Mishkan.

Klal Yisrael donated the materials to build the Mishkan not out of obligation, rather the love of HaShem in their hearts inspired them to bring their offerings. Since they deeply aspired to come close to HaShem, correspondingly, HaShem came intensely close to them.

Imagine that you are standing with Klal Yisrael in the desert. Hear Moshe Rabenu ask the nation to voluntarily donate materials to build the Mishkan. Sense the heartfelt resolve of Klal Yisrael to bring the gold and silver in order to come close to HaShem. Envision yourself and thousands of others joyously bringing the required materials to Moshe Rabenu. Experience the awesome holiness of Mount Sinai that HaShem revealed in the Mishkan.

SF - Let It Go!

"You shall surely let go of your indignation" (Shemot 23:5). Imagine you share some personal information with your friend. A few days later someone tells you, "Dave told me that you having marital problems." You are mortified that your friend mentioned the issue that you had told him in confidence. How should you veiw him in the future? The Torah has remarkable advice, "Let it go!" Forget what happened and let go of your critical feelings. It is a Mitzvah to draw him close to you with love and friendship! Maybe this positive approach will have a good impact on him and he will be inspired by your compassion to correct and improve his ways.

Judgement and criticism of others is often counterproductive. The compassionate Torah has a game-changing idealogy: "Let it go," and win your friend's redemption by smiling on him with love, acceptance, and joy.

Emulate HaShem's compassion and forgiveness. (1) Let go of your judgements of others. (2) Respond to unsuitable behavior with love and friendship. (3) Give people the support and confidence to grow towards goodness and personal transformation. (4) Remember the healing power of love.
(Based on the commentary of the Tomer Devorah, Chapter One)

SF - Receive Rav Yisrael Salanter's Blessing On His Yarzeit

A scorched, ravaged Beis Medrash, a shattered Kehillah. Huge flames burst out in the dead of night, enveloping the Beis Mussar of Rabbi Yisrael Salanter. Scraps of charred wood are all that remain of the beautiful furniture, and the vast majority of sifrei kodesh, the pride and joy of the Beis Medrash, were tearfully placed in genizah after their letters ascended to Shamayim. A sacred house of Torah, tefillah and mussar was devastated, leaving many bleeding hearts and a fervent yearning to rebuild.

Rabbi Yisrael Salanter’s Mussar Movement continues flourishing and expanding today, inflaming hearts with passion and desire to serve Hashem with love. Twenty years ago, Harav Tzvi Miller shlit”a, founder and Nasi of the Salant Foundation, founded an organization to disseminate divrei mussar to thousands of Yidden worldwide. The inspirational, accessible content, which is presented in pleasant, easy-to-learn format, is disseminated by email every day to thousands of learners around the world. The relevant, compelling lessons arouse many hearts to serve Hashem with ahavah and yirah and to rectify our middos in the sacred tradition of Rabbi Yisrael Salanter. Over the years, Mosdos Salant has translated foundational sifrei mussar into several languages and disseminated them to Jewish communities around the world in order to ingrain mussar in the heart of every Jew.

A decade after the founding of Mosdos Salant, Rav Miller opened Kollel Tiferes Yisrael which is called after the founder of the Mussar Movement Rabbi Yisrael Salanter zt”l. This exceptional Kollel integrates high-level learning of hora’ah and halachah with a special daily seder in mussar, with the goal of cultivating Rabbanim and talmidei chachamim whose knowledge and erudition is matched by outstanding character traits and integrity.

As Ramat Beit Shemesh Gimmel grew and was settled by thousands of Torah families, Rav Miller opened the Beis Medrash and Beis Mussar of Rabbi Yisrael Salanter, which over time, developed into a large, close-knit kehillah of the finest lomdei Torah and yirei Shamayim. The Beis Medrash, which also became home to Kollel Tiferes Yisrael, hosts daily shiurim, chaburos and shmuessen, as well as occasional lectures from famous mashpi’im and baalei mussar who inspire local residents to enhance limud Torah, middos tovos and kedushah.

Several weeks ago, in the middle of the night, a fire broke out on the main floor of the Beis Medrash. Within minutes, a wall of fire enveloped the Beis Medrash; the windows exploded and tongues of fire reached inside, causing terrible damage to the building.

Our beloved Beis Medrash and Beis Mussar, along with hundreds of precious sifrei kodesh were consumed in flames, and our hearts are shattered. How can we stand idly by in the face of such catastrophe? We must reinstate the Kollel, shiurim and chaburos, along with the magnificent kol Torah that pulsates from this sacred place! We must uphold the legacy of Rabbi Yisrael Salanter!

$100,000. It will take us $100,000 to restore the Beis Medrash and Beis Mussar!

SF - The Yarzeit of Rav Yisrael Salanter -- Special Edition!

Today, the 25th of Shevat, is the yartzeit of Rabbi Yisrael Salanter. Amongst his many outstanding attributes, Rabbi Yisrael was extraordinarily empathetic of others who were undergoing hardship. The following story about a Maggid, is a perfect illustration of Rav Yisrael's finely tuned sensitivity. In order to understand the story we need to know that a Maggid, was a wandering Jewish preacher. He would travel to diffferent Shuls and communities and give over a Torah based sermon. Afterwards, the listeners would make a collection for the speaker, and this is how the Maggid made a living.

Once, a Maggid came to a Beit Midrash in Kovno and asked permission to give a sermon. However, there was a group of men in the Beis Midrash who had gathered to learn together, as was their regular practice. They told the Maggid that since they had come to learn together, he could not give his sermon because it would knock out their learning.

Rabbi Salanter was present in the Beis Midrash at this time. He turned to the people who weren't willing to give up their learning and said, "Hillel said, 'Whatever is bad for you, do not do to your friend.' Why didn't Hillel say in the affirmative, 'Whatever is good for you, you should do for your friend." Rav Yisrael answered, "Many times that which if good for me, is bad for my friend." Yet, since we are focused on our good, we can't see that our good negatively impacts upon our friend. Therefore, Hillel tells us, "Whatever is bad for you, do not do to your friend." Rav Yisrael, continued to explain, 'By considering how distressed we would be if we were in our friend's shoes, we will easily understand the right thing to do. Let us consider how we would feel if we were the Maggid that was denied the chance to speak. How are you going to feed and support your family, who are depending on you for their daily bread? Therefore, it us our obligation to give up our plan to learn together, so that the Maggid can give us his sermon and make his livelihood."

Rabbi Salanter's remarks carry a powerful lesson. It teaches us how to sense the pain of our friend, that we might not be able to see when we are pursuing our own benefit. If we adapt Hillel's perspective of putting ourselves in our friend's shoes before we act, we will learn how to recognize if "our good" will have a negative impact on our friend. This will inspire us to show great sensitivity to others and avoid causing them pain in the pursuit of our "good."

Each year on Rav Yisrael's yarzeit, we ask our subscribers to send us names and email addresses of their friends and family members who will be enriched by our daily lessons. We will explain to each new subscriber that a friend recommended that we add them to our subscriber list. If they prefer not to receive, we will show them how to easily "unsubscribe."
