SF - The Secret Healing Power of Hardship \ Parashat Yayeishev

The Secret Healing Power of Hardship  \ Parashat Yayeishev

D'var Torah: "And they said to Yoseph, 'We dreamt a dream but there is no interpreter for it.' So Yoseph said to them, 'Do not interpretations belong to HaShem? Tell me your dream if you please.'" HaShem's method of healing is different than the ways of man. For instance, a doctor performs surgery with a scalpel and heals with a bandage. Whereas, HaShem heals with the very means that he wounds. For instance, Yoseph suffered consequences through boasting over his dreams to his brothers, and afterwards HaShem saved him through the dreams of the royal cupbearer and baker. This in accordance with the verse, "And it will be a time of trouble for Yaacov, and from the trouble will sprout his deliverance" (Jeremiah 30:7). Amazingly, the healing power of HaShem is embedded in the very troubles that He sends us.

Moral: The knowledge that our troubles contain the perfect medicine to heal our souls is the secret to peace of mind. In addition, this insight helps us cope with our difficulties because even though they are bitter, we are aware that they deliver to us the healing power of HaShem.

Application: Envision Yoseph telling his brothers that he dreamt that they will bow down to him. After relating his dreams, many terrible hardships fall on Yoseph. Even though his brothers sold him into slavery, Yoseph maintains his trust in HaShem. Yoseph is able to accept his hardships because he knows that HaShem's healing power is embedded in these difficulties. Strengthen your trust that all of the hardships that HaShem sends you contain the perfect medicine to heal your soul.

SF - The Supreme Merit of Torah \ Parashat Yayeishev

The Supreme Merit of Torah \ Parashat Yayeishev

D'var Torah: "And Yospeh came home to do his work" (Bereishis 39:11).
The phrase "his work" alludes to Yoseph's' spiritual work, which earned him immeasurable merit. Each day after completing his assigned tasks of servitude, Yoseph would sit and study the Torah lessons that he had learned with his father, Yaacov Avinu. The merit of Torah protected Yoseph from falling to the persistent seductions of his master's wife. In addition, all of Yoseph's phenomenal success and the great favor he found in the eyes of everyone who met him, was powered by the merit of his Torah study. Even when he was imprisoned, Yoseph found favor in the eyes of the head warden, as the verse expresses about the beautiful impact of Torah, "A beautiful deer inspiring favor" (Mishlei 5:19). So too, the merit of Torah study lead to his personal redemption and royal appointment.

Moral: Just as the study of Torah granted protection, success, and grace to Yoseph, so too, whoever studies Torah will merit these three wonderful qualities. In addtion, Yoseph's redemption is a sign for future generations of our final redemption.

Application: Envision Yoseph studying Torah each evening after completing his daily work. Set a time each day for Torah study. When you engage in Torah study, remember that holiness, grace, and success, surround you. Be confident that just as Torah study granted the merit of redemption to Yoseph, so too, Torah study will grant us the merit of our final redemption.

SF - Flow With the Gift of Life \ The Secrets of Tomer Devorah

Flow With the Gift of Life \ The Secrets of Tomer Devorah

D'var Torah: "How great are Your works, HaShem! You have made them all in wisdom". HaShem is the Source of Life for all living things. Indeed, if HaShem did not continuously  breathe His breath of life within us, all of life would cease to exist. HaShem, alone, mercifully instills the various levels of life that are appropriate for each one of His creations: the heavenly angels above and man below; the animals, birds, and fish; and the trees, grass, and herbs. What's more, HaShem is the Merciful Father to all of His creations. This is especially true of Klal Yisrael because their holy souls emanate from the Highest Wisdom.

Moral: There is no greater gift than the gift of life which HaShem grants us, for no other reason than His unconditional love. We express our appreciation of HaShem's gift of life in our daily prayer service: "Everything alive will gratefully acknowledge You, Selah!"

Application: Emulate HaShem by helping your friends survive and thrive. Look for ways to guide them to success both materially and spiritually. Share words of Torah with them, so that they can increase their share in the World to Come. Envision yourself as a "river of life," encouraging, assisting, and nourishing all of HaShem's creations.

SF - Lessons In Love - Yoseph HaTzadik \ Parashat Vayeishev

Lessons In Love - Yoseph HaTzadik \ Parashat Vayeishev

D'var Torah: The Torah's narrative about Yoseph at age seventeen, begins by telling us two contradictory facts. Firstly, he fussed over his appearance, curling his hair and the like. Secondly, he befriended the sons of the handmaidens because the sons of Leah treated them like slaves.  Subsequently, the Torah states: "Yaacov loved Yosef because he excelled in the mastery of Torah wisdom." Yet, there is no question that his brothers were also great Torah scholars. If so, what was special about Yoseph's Torah? Our Sages tell us that the purpose of Torah is repentance and good deeds. Meaning, the lessons of Torah must be internalized so that our actions resonate with Torah values. Even though Yoseph was younger than his brothers, he showed great strength of character in befriending the sons of the handmaidens. Instead of "following the crowd" who rejected the brothers, Yoseph stood alone in defense of his brothers, showing them great sensitivity. Yaacov had special love for Yoseph because he recognized that Yoseph, at such a young age, had already attained the primary principle of the Torah, "Love your friend like you love yourself."
Moral: A person who makes the love and concern for his fellow man the priority in his life, has attained the  essential fulfilment of Torah. Even if he is young and lacking in maturity, his capacity to care for others is the ultimate spiritual attainment.

Application: Be inspired by Yoseph's concern for the sons of the handmaidens, and open your heart to care for your fellow man. Dedicate a few minutes each day to instil the love for every person in your heart. Reflect on the people in your life and think of how you can be more sensitive and helpful to them. Before you pray open your heart to include all of Klal Yisrael in your prayers and contemplate on the axiomatic principle of the Torah, "Love your friend as you love yourself."
