SF - HaShem Is Close to Us When We Pray

"If you will faithfully observe this entire commandment that I command you, to perform it, to love HaShem, your G-d, to walk in all His ways and to cleave to Him" (Devarim 11:22). The phrase "and to cleave to Him" implies that we have a precious opportunity in this world. Specifically, during our lifetime on earth we are able to draw close to HaShem and pray to Him whenever we want to do so. In light of this, the verse says, "Seek HaShem when He is found, cry out to Him when He is close." Meaning, as long as we are in this world -- "when HaShem is close" -- we can call out to HaShem and He will hear our prayers. However, in the Next World (Olam HaBah), there is distance and separation between man and HaShem. It is not possible to come close to HaShem and pray Him at all times, with the same closeness that we have in this world.

Man is privileged with a unique closeness to HaShem during his lifetime. Although the souls in Olam HaBah experience unbounded delight, they no longer have the same power of prayer that we enjoy .When we pray, it is as if we are speaking into HaShem's ear; and He will surely hear our prayers with great compassion!

Envision a man who needs a great favor from the king, a matter of life and death. His friends advise him to go to the palace and try to plead before the king. In the meanwhile, the king comes incognito into the city where this man lives and stays as a guest in his house. Only after the king leaves, does the man learn that the king had stayed as a guest in his very house. He falls to the ground and cries out, "If only I had known the king was in my house, I would have cried out before him. For sure he would have shown me mercy."

SF - "Never Give Up" - King David

King David met every challenge with the following immutable rule, "Even if the sword is laying on your neck, do not despair from praying to HaShem and asking Him for compassion." King David left us an invaluable legacy, a winning game-plan for life. That is, to always stay optimistic, have inner strength, and find success. When you have a financial crisis, an illness, or a broken relationship, etc., NEVER give up. Turn to HaShem for help. HaShem is waiting for our prayers and heartfelt  supplications. In the blink of an eye, HaShem will turn our darkness to light and our sorrow to joy.

King David was resolute, and uncompromisingly hopeful in his absolute trust in HaShem, even in the most trying moments. His trust in HaShem was the secret of his incomparable greatness.

Application: Envision King David strengthening his faith in HaShem, even when the odds were against him. For instance, taking on Goliath. Follow King David's example and turn to HaShem when the chips are down. Be irrepressible and confident that HaShem will save you and convert your hardship into joy.

SF - Offer a Little Help and Do a Lot

Shamai said, 'Offer a little help and do a lot.'" Often people promise they will do a lot to help their friend in time of need. Yet, despite their assurances and good intentions, they end up doing very little. Shamai taught that it is best to make a modest promise to provide help for your friend. Ultimately, when your friend needs your support, do a great deal more than you originally promised. For example, when the three desert travelers came to Avraham Avinu, he told them, "I will serve you a little bread to eat." Yet, ultimately, he served them a sumptuous banquet.

When we offer to help others, it is appropriate to first express ourselves with humility and graciousness, and then actively help them with as much kindness as we can.

Envision the kindness and gentleness of Avraham, offering to share a little bread with the desert travelers. Sense how he welcomes them with care, sensitivity, and love. See him provide them with a sumptuous meal, personally serving them with kindness, warmth and compassion. Speak modestly when you volunteer to help others, and help them with the maximum effort you can make.
