SF -- Chanukah: HaShem's Unconditiional Love

The Rambam writes, “The Mitzvah of lighting the Chanukah lights is a very beloved Mitzvah.” In light of the fact that the Rambam does not say this regarding any other Mitzvah, it is imperative to unearth the unique quality of kindling the Chanukah Menorah. The Torah tells us that Klal Yisrael enjoys the status of HaShem loving us as His very children. The Talmud raises the question: does HaShem loves us as His children only when we are complicit with the Torah? Or does HaShem love us unconditionally; I.e., regardless of whether or not we uphold the Torah? The Talmud concludes that HaShem does in fact love Klal Yisrael unequivocally, even if we stray far from His path. During the time of the Greeks, most of Klal Yisrael fell to the influence of the pagan Greeks, and remained unrepentant. A minority of Klal Yisrael, lead by the Chashmonayim, held valiantly to Torah dedication. Even though a great number amongst Klal Yisrael rebelled against HaShem, HaShem revealed His unconditional love for us by performing the great miracles of Chanukah. The revelation of HaShem’s unequivocal love for Klal Yisrael, makes the observance of Chanukah especially beloved to the Jewish People.

Just as parents love their children unconditionally, HaShem, the Merciful Father of Klal Yisrael loves us unconditionally.

As you kindle the Chanukah lights contemplate on HaShem’s unconditional love for Klal Yisrael. Reflect on the amazing miracles that HaShem performed for Klal Yisrael even though the majority of people were steeped in heathen practices. Close your eyes and open your heart to feel the unabated love and compassion that HaShem holds for you. Rejoice in receiving HaShem’s unequivocal love every second of your existence.

Hanucá - Por Que 36 Velas?

SF -- The Hidden Light

During the Festival of Chanukah we light 36 candles. The number 36 is very significant because it corresponds to the "Ohr HaGanuz" - the Hidden Light. When HaShem created the world, He illuminated a special light upon the earth. After 36 hours, HaShem decided to hide away this light - the Ohr HaGanuz -- for the righteous in the World to Come. HaShem hid this light in the Torah, corresponding to the 36 Tractates of the Talmud. The Menorah that was kindled in the Temple, revealed aspects of the Ohr HaGanuz. Also, the 36 Hanukah candles that Klal Yisrael light reflect a portion of the holy Ohr HaGanuz upon the world. When the Meshiach comes, HaShem will illuminate the full radiance of the holy Ohr HaGanuz upon the entire nation of Israel.

When we light the Hanukah candles, the individual lights combine into the sublime emanation of the Ohr HaGauz.

Envision Aaron HaCohen lighting the Menorah and experience the holiness that elevates the souls of Klal Yisrael. When you light the Chanukah Menorah, reflect on the phenomenon that all of the Chanukah Lights that are kindled throughout the world, combine to illuminate the world with the Hiddden Light of the Ohr HaGanuz. Gaze upon the flames of the Chanukah Lights, and imagine all of Klal Yisrael enjoying the Ohr HaGanuz.

SF -- One Spark of Fatih

The unprecedented miracles of Hanukah proved without a trace that HaShem has special favor for Klal Yisrael. An ancient parable reveals the secret that awakened the extraordinary miracles of Chanukah. A flax merchant entered the town with his camels laden with flax. The blacksmith wondered, "Where will all this flax be stored?" A clever man answered, "One spark from your bellows will burn it all up." Flax is highly combustible because it is filled with air. So too, the Greeks infiltrated into Eretz Yisrael with a powerful and massive army. "How can we conquer them?" someone asked. A wise man answered, "As formidable as they seem, they have no real power. One spark of trust in HaShem utterly consumes the Greek army."

The enemies of Israel are "highly combustible." One spark of trust in HaShem in the hearts of Klal Yisrael destroys the most formidable foe.

Reflect on the remarkable miracles of Chanukah. As you light the Menorah, envision that you are kindling the flame of faith in your heart. See the spark of faith of Klal Yisrael burst out and consume all of our enemies. Experience the joy, holiness, and light of the final redemption.
