“You shall not cause pain to any widow or orphan." (Shemot 22:23) The widow received a registered letter stating that the bank is going to foreclose on her home. She went to see her Rabbi and cried out, "Rabbi, I have no money to pay. They are going to throw me and my children into the street!" Early next morning the Rabbi paid a call to the bank manager. "Rabbi what brings you to my home?" asked the bank manager. The Rabbi didn't reply. He was using a strategy of silence to demonstrate the seriousness of the situation. After twenty minutes of silence the Rabbi got up to leave. "Surely you have a reason for coming to my house?" asked the bank manager. "Yes, but sometimes people can hear what i have to say, other times they cannot," said the Rabbi. "Please, Rabbi tell me, I will listen to you," he said. The Rabbi told him that he was worried that the widow would end up on the street with her children. The bank manager was very moved by the Rabbi's heartfelt worry for the widow. Amazingly, the bank manager's heart was filled with compassion and he personally paid off the widow's entire mortgage. Wisdom has the power to open every heart and bring salvation in every situation. (1)Reflect on someone you know that needs your support or help. (2) Use your wisdom to design the best plan to help your friend. (3) Put the plan into action. (4) Bring joy, comfort, and salvation to all of your friends. May the souls who left this world be remembered for a blessing. Not an earthbound creature, a bird soars across the sky of blue. Imagine an eagle who never took to flight. He is content sitting under the shade of a great tree. What a pity! If he would but take to the air who would discover thrills, excitement, and adventure.   Just as the eagle has lost its orientation, so too while taking passage on "mother earth" we often forget our spiritual agenda. We are temporarily stationed here to earn our eternal share in Gan Eden. Yet it is so easy to become distracted by the material attractions that surround us.   In response to this dilemma, HaShem sends us wise counsel through the very Mitzvoth. For instance, the Torah has a special system of laws regarding the ancestral heritage of the Land of Israel. On the Jubilee Year - the 50th year - all land that was purchased reverts to the original owner.   The practice and fulfillment of these laws reminds us that the earth is not ours. We are like passengers in a ship, who never consider their cabin as "home."   May we take advantage of the invaluable advice the Torah offers us. Then we will remember our true destination. Our souls will soar to Heaven, where we will rejoice in the splendorous light of "The Living King." SF - The Healing Power of Yom Kippur

The journey is beautiful

This week’s Parasha mentions the observance of Yom Kippur. Our Sages tell us (Ta’anit 26b), “There is no better day for Klal Yisrael than Yom Kippur.” Yet, for most of us, it is a solemn day of repentance and introspection. Why is such a serious day considered the best of days?  Yom Kippur is a time of liberation. It provides us with the opportunity to extricate ourselves from negativity and unfavorable deeds. If we open our hearts to the holy power of Yom Kippur and fill our souls with goodness, compassion, and kindness, the Prophet assures us (Isaiah 58), “Then your light shall burst forth as the dawn, and your healing shall quickly spring forth, your righteous deed will precede you and the glory of HaShem will gather you in.” The Prophet stirs us to realize that Yom Kippur is a time of joy and celebration. To be sure, there is no greater happiness than forgiveness and redemption. The purpose of serving HaShem is sincere joy and delight. Although certain aspects of Yom Kippur evoke remorse, this is the means and not the end. Through proper observance of Yom Kippur, our spirits our cleansed, our soul elevated, and our hearts filled with elation.
