SF - The Inner Meaning of Mitzvot \ Insight For Parashat Tetzaveh

The Inner Meaning of Mitzvot \ Insight for Parashat Tetzaveh

D'var Torah: "And you shall command the Children of Israel, and they shall take to you pure olive oil for lighting, to kindle the lamps continually" (Shemot 27:20). It would have been correct for the verse to say "they shall bring to you pure olive oil..." Nevertheless, the Torah wrote "they shall take to you pure olive oil" in order to reveal to us a great secret. Specifically, when we perform a Mitzvah with the proper intention we are not giving, rather we are taking great gifts of light and holiness. In this light, the Midrash explains the inner meaning of a verse from Mishlei (6:23), The flame of a Mitzvah:  "When a person fulfills a Mitzvah it is as if he kindled a flame in front of HaShem and instilled life within his very soul; for the soul of man is called the flame of HaShem."

Moral: Each Mitzvah is a spiritual source, and a wellspring of goodly waters for us to partake.  The more we are aware of HaShem's Presence in the Mitzvot, the more we actively enrich our souls with new supplies of light, holiness, and life.

Application:  Envision the joy of Aaron HaKohen kindling the lights of the Menorah in the Mishkan. Sense the holiness that he draws from the Mitzvah and the closeness to HaShem that he experiences.  Before you do a Mitzvah, reflect that the Mitzvah is an opportunity to kindle the flame of your holy soul, and an opportunity to come close to HaKodesh Baruch Hu.

SF - The Miracle of Our Daily Renewal \ Gratitude

The Miracle of Our Daily Renewal \ Gratitude

D'var Torah: "It is good to thank HaShem and to sing praise to Your Name, Most High. To retell of Your kindness in the morning and Your faithfulness in the nights" (Tehillim 92). The Torah enlightens us, as to where we can most clearly discover HaShem's Kingship and Kindness directly impacting our lives, each and every day. Specifically, when we go to sleep in the evening, we entrust our weary soul and tired body to HaShem's excellent and ever-present care. Amazingly, HaShem's eternal faithfulness and kindness is clearly evident each morning when we awaken refreshed, revitalized, and renewed. The Prophet Isaiah so beautifully proclaimed this very truth, "He has established His Throne in kindness" (Isaiah 16:5).

Moral:  The Throne of HaShem's eternal Kingship and Kindness is established within the fabric of our very lives. Our awakening each morning feeling reenergized is the clearest testimony of HaShem's eternal faithfulness. Our morning prayers grant us the opportunity to express our joyous thanks to HaShem for His unbounded kindness.

Application: Envision King David awakening in the morning. Sense the joy he feels in recognizing how wondrously HaShem renewed his spirit. When you awaken in the morning reflect on the verse, "It is good to thank HaShem and to sing praise to Your Name, Most High. To retell of Your kindness in the morning and Your faithfulness in the nights." Let your awareness of HaShem's kindness move your soul and inspire your morning prayers to be filled with heartfelt joy.

SF - The Power of Spiritual Vibrancy \ Purim Insight

The Power of Spiritual Vibrancy \ Purim Insight

D'var Torah: Haman knew that from the ancient days of our Patriarchs, HaShem revealed His powerful love for Klal Yisrael, His favored and chosen nation. What's more, the great miracles of the Exodus clearly demonstrated to all mankind HaShem's unique connection and commitment to His treasured B'nei Yisrael. Haman also took note of the destruction of the Temple. He assumed this signaled that Klal Yisrael had lost favor in HaShem's eyes, and were vulnerable to attack. In this vein, he planned his evil scheme to annihilate the Jews, Chas V'Shalom. However, Haman made a false assumption, as proven by the following incident. Mordecai, the esteemed leader of Klal Yisrael, met a group of children coming out of Cheder.  Each child told him a special Torah insight that he had learned that day. Mordecai rejoiced saying, "Klal Yisrael is spiritually vibrant. Therefore, Haman's plan has no chance of success!"

Moral: We don't have to be the greatest tzadik or tzadekes to be worthy in the eyes of HaShem.  As long as we are spiritually vibrant and perform the Mitzvot with dedication and enthusiasm, we can rely on HaShem's blessing, protection, and redemption.

Application: Learn Torah with joy and perform the Mitzvot with enthusiasm and vibrancy -- and strengthen the wellspring of blessings, redemption, and miracles that HaShem continuously showers upon Klal Yisrael.

SF - Connect Yourself to The Fountain of Goodness \ Bitachon

Connect Yourself to The  Fountain of Goodness \ Bitachon

D'var Torah: A person who sincerely trusts in HaShem never worries, as the verse says: "Blessed is the person who trusts in HaShem, and HaShem is his security. He is like a  tree planted by the waterside that spreads its roots into the stream" (Yermiyahu 17). Just as a tree planted by the waterside never worries for lack of water, so too, a person who trusts in HaShem never worries because he connects himself to the Source of Good. In addition, a person who has perfect trust in HaShem never fears any setback or downfall, as the verse says (Ishaiah 12): "I will trust and I will not be afraid."

Moral: Trust in HaShem gives us confidence in HaShem's help, support, and protection. Even more, it connects us to HaShem, the very Source of Good, so that the endless blessings of HaShem constantly flow upon us.

Application: Envision a tree growing on the side of a stream. See how its roots stretch into the steam, and take in a continuous supply of life-giving waters. Attain tranquility by placing your heartfelt trust in HaShem, and connect yourself to the ever-flowing Fountain of Goodness. Enjoy His unbounded and ever-present blessings, protection, forgiveness, and loving kindness!
