SF - The Hidden Meaning of Matzot

Experience the Holiness of Yetziat Mitzrayim \ The Hidden Meaning of Matzot

D'var Torah: "What is the reason for eating Matzah?" (Hagadah)
Most people assume that the Matzah that we eat at Seder night commemorates the Matzot that Klal Yisrael baked when they left Egypt. They left so quickly that there wasn't time for the dough to rise. However, they didn't leave Egypt until the morning following the "slaying of the firstborn." If our eating of the Matzah represents the Matzah that they baked when they left  Egypt, then the Mitzvah of eating Matzah should also be observed in the morning. Rather, the Matzot that we eat at the Seder alludes to the secret of the Matzot of the daily Minchah offering that the Kohanmim ate in the Temple. The Torah tells us that Matzot of the Minchah offering were made without any leaven, because leaven in dough symbolizes the  negative impulse in the heart of man. The Kohanim ate the unleavened Matzot of the Minchah offering with the highest level of holiness - "Kodesh HaKodishim."

On the night of the"slaying of the first-born," HaShem revealed the Shechinah to Klal Yisrael. The Shechinah sanctified all of Klal Yisrael with great holiness and separated them from the defiled Egyptians, who were immersed in idol worship. This night was also called, "Lil Shimorim" - a night of guarding" because HaShem protected Klal Yisrael from all negative and impure forces. In commemoration of the great holiness that Klal Yisrael attained in Egypt, we eat Matzot, which are imbued with great holiness. Each Pesach eve, the same great holiness that HaShem revealed to Klal Yisrael in Egypt, is again revealed to us when we fulfil the Mitzvot of the Seder, especially the eating of holy Matzah.

Application: When you fulfil the Mitzvah of eating Matzah at the Seder, imagine that you are a Kohen eating the daily Minchah offering in the Beit HaMikdash. Sense the wonderful holiness, purity, and spiritual elevation that HaShem grants to us at this special occasion. Reflect on HaShem protecting you from all negative and impure forces.  Feel the joy of coming close to the light and holiness of the Shechinah, Kodesh HaKadoshim.
(Based on the commentary of the M'Harashah to Pesachim 116)

SF - The Secret of Attaining Holiness at the Passover Seder

The Secret of Attaining Holiness at the Passover Seder

D'var Torah: "Rabban Gamliel said, 'Whoever does not mention Pesach, Matzah, and Maror has not fulfilled his obligation.'" We read in the Passover Hagadah that before we partake of the Pesach lamb, the Matzah, and the Bitter Herbs during the Seder, it is necessary to mention the reason for each one of these three Mitzvot. Yet, we don't find that any other Mitzvah needs to be preceded by a verbal explanation. Why do we need to speak out the reason for these three Mitzvot? When Klal Yisrael were enslaved in Egypt, they were contaminated by the impurity of idol worship that was so pervasive in that country. Since they were distanced from holiness, they lacked the spiritual vitality to properly fulfil the Mitzvot. Therefore, HaShem asked them to state the purpose of these Mitzvot before performing them. Amazingly, the verbal dedication that they made before fulfilling each Mitzvah, restored the holiness within their souls. Once they recovered their holiness, they were in position to fulfil these three Mitzvot with the proper sanctity and purity that is required by the Torah.

Moral: Even though we have been affected by the impurity that surrounds us, the verbal explanation for the Pesach, Matzah, and Maror has a great purifying power. By articulating the reason for these three central Mitzvot of Passover, HaShem removes the impurity from our souls and draws us close to the light of the holy Shechinah.

Application:  Share this D'var Torah with the people joining you at the Seder. Convey to them that explaining the reason for Pesach, Matzah, and Maror is one of the most important parts of the Seder. Mentioning the reason for these three Mitzvot cleanses us of impurity and  draws us close to holiness. Inspire your family and friends, "Now we will be able to fulfil each one of these Mitzvot with holiness, joy, and closeness to HaShem."
(Based on the commentary of the M'Harashah to Pesachim 117)

SF - Down to the Last Minute \ Pesach Insights

Down to the Last Minute \ Pesach Insights

D'var Torah: "HaShem rescues us as quickly as the wink of an eye." Had we remained in Egypt for one more minute we would have slipped into the fiftieth level of impurity. Had that occurred, we would have been lost forever. Thankfully, HaShem saved us from abolishment in the last minute. In one minute, we went from death to life, from darkness to light, from pain to happiness, from slavery to freedom. Why did HaShem wait until the final minute to save us from such a terrible fate? HaShem revealed to us the very secret of faith and trust in HaShem: Never give up trusting in HaShem!

Moral: Each and every "small" minute of  time holds the same power of goodness and salvation that awakened our spectacular redemption from Egypt.

Application: Envision that you and your family are slaves in Egypt. Imagine HaShem suddenly reveals Himself with amazing kindness and compassion. In a moments time, you, your family, and all of Klal Yisrael go from slavery to freedom. May the awareness that every minute of our life has the potential to deliver us from darkness to light, inspire us to always trust in HaShem.

SF - The Inner Meaning of the Ten Plagues \ Pesach Insights

The Inner Meaning of the Ten Plagues \ Pesach Insights

D'var Torah: The Ten Plagues of Egypt began at the lowest point on earth and, progressively ascended to the highest realms of the universe, revealing that the Almighty is the Master of all the dimensions of creation, from the lowest to the highest.

The first plague, where the waters were turned into blood, occurred in the rivers, which rest on the foundation of the earth. In the second plague, frogs swarmed in the river, still below the earth's surface. In the third, lice emerged from the soil of the earth itself. The next plague was the wild animals, which exist upon the earth. The fifth plague was a plague on the animals, transmitted through the air, which is suspended over the earth. The next plague, boils, was a manifestation of fire, which is above the air. The seventh plague was hail, coming from the clouds. The eighth plague were the locusts, flying above the clouds. The ninth plague was darkness, which affected the bright luminaries that are in the heavenly heights. The last plague, the death of the firstborn, showed that G-d is the Master of souls who live in the spiritual realm.

Moral: This Divine revelation during the Exodus from Egypt is the cornerstone of our faith and showed all the creations that the Almighty rules over everything from the seabed to the souls in heaven.

Application: May the light of Pesach renew our trust in the Creator, the G-d of Israel. By this merit HaShem will help us in every situation and fill our lives with salvations, blessings and joy, just as our ancestors witnessed in the days of old!
Strengthen your faith that HaShem's rescue comes as quickly as the wink of an eye.
