Words of Comfort \ Parashat Toldot
"Yitzchak's request for adversity brings solace to all those who bear distress."
D'var Torah"Rabbi Yehudah ben Shimon said: Yitzchak requested hardship. He prayed, 'Master of the universe, when a person dies without bearing trouble, the attribute of justice is stretched out against him; but if You bring him distress, the attribute of judgment will not be stretched out against him.' HaShem responded, 'You have made a worthy request, and I will begin with you.' Hardship is not mentioned from the beginning of the Torah until Yitzchak's request: 'And it came to pass that when Yitzchak was elderly, his eyesight grew dim' (Bereishis 27:1). Yitzchak Avinu was a "pure offering" -- one of our three patriarchs who were unique in their elevated level of holiness and wisdom. Nevertheless, Yitzchak feared that unless he experienced hardship in this world to atone for his sins, he would be subject to judgments in the World to Come.

Moral: Yitzchak's request for adversity brings solace to all those who bear distress. Yitzchak required suffering to atone for his sins. So too, the afflictions of this world, cleanse our sins and spares us from suffering in the World to Come.

Application:Reflect on the concept that all hardship brings forgiveness, compassion, and healing. Be comforted in knowing that hardship purifies us and ensures our eternal share in the eternal World to Come.

SF - The Awe of Yitzchak Avinu \ Parashat Toldot

The Awe of Yitzchak Avinu \ Parashat Toldot
"The awe of HaShem awakens great joy within the soul, as per the verse, "Rejoice in trembling before HaShem."
D'var TorahOur Torah tells us that Yitzchak Avinu feared on two occasions. Firstly, at the "Binding of Yitzchak," the fear of death gripped Yitzchak so intensely that his soul left his body. Secondly, "Yitzchak feared greatly" upon realizing that he almost mistakenly gave the blessings to Esau instead of Yaacov. Even though the second fear was more intense than the first, Yitzchak's soul did not leave his body upon learning that he almost mistakenly gave the blessings to Esau. If Yitzchak's fear of giving the blessings to the wrong son was more intense than the fear of death, why didn't this fear also cause his soul to leave his body? The fear of the Akeda was the fear of being killed by the sword. Whereas, Yitzchak's fear of almost giving the blessings to Esau was awakened by his awe of HaShem.

Moral: The awe of HaShem does not endanger our health. Conversely, it enhances our life, as the verse states, "The awe of HaShem increases life." What's more, the awe of HaShem awakens great joy within the soul, as per the verse, "Rejoice in trembling before HaShem."

Application: Rejoice in seeking to attain the awe of HaShem and the pursuit of good character traits. Be confident in knowing that the correct Mussar study never causes sadness. Instead, Mussar study and the pursuit of the awe of HaShem awakens supreme joy, wisdom, and fulfillment.
