SF - Save One Person and Save the Entire World

Binyamin HaTzadik ministered the communal charity fund. Once a woman appealed to him for help during a draught. He told her that all the money in the fund had already been distributed. She said, "Rabbi, if you don't help me, I and my seven children with perish." Rabbi Binyamin supported her from his own private resource. Subsequently, Rabbi Binyamin became very ill. The angels approached HaShem, saying, "It says in the Torah, 'If a person saves one life, it is as if he saved the entire world.' How much more so, when one man saved eight souls." HaShem immediately rescinded the decree and granted Binyamin HaTzadik another twenty-two years of life.

The ultimate goal of the Torah is repentance and good deeds. Binyamin HaTzadik's compassion and kindness fulfilled the essence of the Torah. Therefore HaShem granted him an additional twenty-two years, corresponding to the twenty-two letters of the Hebrew alphabet, from which the Torah is comprised.

Review the story of Binyamin HaTzadik and be inspired by his compassion and kindness. Contemplate on someone who needs your help. Think of the best way to help him and put your plan into action. Help him with an effective and heartwarming act of kindness. Perform your kindness with the same dedication and commitment, as if you were Binyamin HaTzadik. Rejoice in your fulfillment of the Torah and the great blessings that HaShem grants you.

SF - Be Pleasant to Your Fellows

"You shall not see the ox of your brother or his sheep or goat straying far away, and ignore them; you shall surely return them to your brother" (Devarim 22:1). Why does the verse emphasize finding your brother's ox "far away" from home? We might assume that we are responsible for returning our neighbor's lost animal only if we find it close to the animal's home. Therefore, the verse writes, "you shall not see the ox of your brother straying far away." Even when we encounter our neighbor's lost sheep far from its home, we are required to make a great effort to bring it home. The Torah requires us to care about our friend's material possessions. How much more so, must we have mercy on every Jewish soul who has strayed from the path!  Moreover, to lovingly restore him to Torah observance, even if it takes a great effort.

Most non-observant people today never had the opportunity to learn about Judaism. They are like a lost sheep, who does not know how to return to his flock. Therefore it is a great Mitzvah to have compassion upon them and show them the path of goodness.

Show great pleasantness to all of your fellow Jews. Even if they are far away from observance, reach out to them with sensitivity and love. Invite them to your home for Shabbos to experience the beauty of our holy Torah.

SF - Honoring Your Friend Rests on Two Pillars

"Rabbi Eliezer says: 'Let the honor of your friend be as dear to you as your own.'" (Avos 2:10) How do we open our hearts to honor our friends with the same honor that we wish for ourself? The sincere honor of one's friend rests on two pillars: respect and patience. In fact, a generous and unending supply of patience is indispensable to sufficiently honor your friend. If one lacks patience and is short-tempered with his friend, there is no question that his friend will feel slighted. In fact, Rabbi Yisrael Salanter said that there is nothing that damages relationships as much as anger. Whereas, constant respect and honor even at times when you don't see eye to eye, insures a lasting and enduring friendship.

Constant respect and patience enhances honor, and effectively preserves and strengthens good relationships.

Envision Avraham Avinu and Sara Emanu honoring their guests and treating them like kings. See how their graciousness, kindness, and respect fills the hearts of their guests with joy. Emulate Avraham's and Sara's winning combination of respect and patience -- and enjoy the wonderful benefits of enduring friendships.
