Access the Protection of the Torah \ Parshat Nitzavim

D'var Torah: "And now you shall write for yourselves this song" (Devarim31:19). This commandment to write a sefer Torah follows the verse (Devarim31:18): "And I shall surely hide My face on that day because of all the evil you have committed." This verse cautions us that if we forsake the Torah, HaShem will "hide himself from us," and we will suffer severe consequences. The juxtaposition of these verses teaches us that the Torah has the power to shield and deliver us from all trouble and suffering. What's more, even in the time of hester panim (when HaShem 'hides Himself' from us because of our wrongdoing), nevertheless, the light of Torah protects us and illuminates a path for us to walk.

Moral: The light of the Torah is a permanent protection. It is important to strengthen our study of Torah, especially in times of troubles, in order that the shield of Torah protect us. Moreover, if we devote ourselves to Torah study, then the light of Torah will dispel the hester panim - and we will see the deliverance of HaShem.

Application: Reflect on the following parable to internalize the great merit of Torah. A man walking through the forest in the darkness of the night, is likely afraid of thorns, pits, thistles, wild beasts, and robbers. This refers to a person devoid of Torah and Mitzvot.... If he is given a torch, he is saved from thorns, pits, thistles; but is still afraid of wild beasts and robbers. This refers to person who has the merit of Mitzvot but does not study Torah....When, however, the the light of dawn shines forth, he is saved from wild beasts and robbers. This refers to the great merit and compassion that HaShem grants to a person who studies Torah.
