SF - The Joy of Giving \ Parashat Re'eh

The Joy of Giving \ Parashat Re'eh

Two aspects comprise giving charity: (1) the act of giving the gift and (2) the happiness of the giver to provide. The Torah teaches the importance of giving charity with joy, "You shall surely give him, and not let your heart feel bad when you give..." (Devarim 15:10).

Some people give charity, yet they struggle over parting with their money. Although they give, they do not give with an open, generous heart. (Rashi)
A person who is "troubled" with giving charity, often delays issuing the funds.

In contrast, a good-hearted person gives generously and immediately.

The desire to give is the essence of Divine kindness. The Kindness of HaShem for His creations flows forth continuously without any limitations. Like the current of a mighty river, the Kindness of HaShem grows and increases, and flows unceasingly and unboundedly. As expressed in the Grace After Meals, "Through His great goodness, we have never lacked."

The Torah reveals that the primary component of giving is not the actual gift, but the joy and desire to help others with one's full heart.

Avraham Avinu was the consummate master of compassion and loving-kindness. May we follow in his footsteps and give abundantly, joyously, and without bounds.
