SF -- The Holy Glow of Yoseph's Countenance

"Behold! Your eyes see as do the eyes of my brother Benjamin that it is my mouth that is speaking to you." (Bereishis 45:12)

Yoseph stated these words to his eleven brothers. Previously, he spoke to them through an interpreter so as not to give away to his brothers that he was, in fact, Yoseph, who they sold into slavery. However, after putting them through severe tests and challenges, he reveals his true identity to them. He dismissed the interpreter and spoke to them in fluent Hebrew. This was proof that he was, in fact, Yoseph. However, their father, Yaacov, may not believe the brothers that Yoseph is alive because they lost their trust in the eyes of their father. However, he would believe Benjamin, who was yet a baby, when they sold him into slavery. And Benjamin was the son of Rachel, the real brother of Yoseph. Therefore, Yaacov would unquestionably believe Benjamin that Yoseph was alive and speaking Hebrew, as he did in his youth.

However, another question arises: the verse states, "Your eyes see." Wouldn't it be more appropriate to say "your ears hear" that I am speaking to you in Hebrew? After all, his primary proof seemed to be that he spoke Hebrew to them. If so, why does the beginning of the verse state, "Your eyes see"?

Rather, Yoseph's face glowed with the Light of the Shechinah — the Holy Divine Presence. The fact that holiness glowed on his face indicated that he did not engage in illicit relations. Therefore, his proof that he was Yoseph, their brother, was both in the holy glow that emanated from his face and his fluency in Hebrew.

May we strengthen our commitment to the Divine Service and merit the light of the Holy Shechinah to shine upon our countenance.
