Mussar Moment: The Boomerang of Thought

"Don't those who devise evil go astray? But kindness and truth shall be established for those who devise good." (Mishlei 14:22)

The Core Lesson

King Solomon reveals that our thoughts are not private; they are active forces. According to the Metzudas Dovid, the moment a person begins to conspire against another, they have already "gone astray." They fall into the trap of believing that mentally conjuring someone else's failure will somehow lead to their own success.

This is a magnitude mistake. Hashem is the witness to our inner world. Negative energy eventually reverses, boomeranging back upon the thinker. Haman is the ultimate example: he spent his nights devising gallows for Mordechai, only to be hanged on them himself.

Conversely, when you "devise good"—when you spend your mental energy hoping for another’s success—you draw Divine kindness upon yourself. These thoughts are eventually established as "Truth," meaning they manifest in the physical world, bringing peace and blessing to both you and your friend.

3-Step Application Exercise

  1. The Mental Audit: Once today, pause and "overhear" your own thoughts. Are you currently "devising" a way to prove someone wrong, or a way to help someone succeed?
  2. The Pivot: If you catch a trace of resentment, visualize it as a boomerang. Realize it will return to you. Immediately replace it with a 30-second wish for that person to receive a specific blessing.
  3. Establish the Truth: Think of one person who is currently struggling. Spend one minute visualizing their problem being solved. By wishing this for them, you are planting the seeds for Hashem to establish that same goodness in your own life.
A Thought for the Soul:
Positive thoughts permeate our lives with unbounded kindness and fill our souls with joy, peace, and goodness.
