בס״דס֣וּר מֵ֭רָע וַעֲשֵׂה־ט֑וֹב "Depart from evil and do good" (Tehillim 34:14)
🕊️ The Post-Yom Kippur ChallengeOn Yom Kippur, we reach for genuine renewal, ascending to profound spiritual heights. Yet all too often, the days that follow see us slipping back into familiar patterns. How do we anchor that hard-earned growth so it endures throughout the year?
⚖️ The Two Pillars of Lasting ChangeAuthentic, enduring repentance (teshuvah) requires a two-part approach:
- 🚫 1. Depart from Evil (Sur Me’ra): Step away from harmful habits, speech, and attitudes.
- 🌟 2. Do Good (Aseh Tov): Cultivate fresh, affirmative actions and positive spiritual momentum.
While removing the negative clears the ground, initiating the good is the true engine of transformation. Uprooting a bad habit leaves a void; if left empty, old behaviors rush back to fill it. By actively building positive habits, we generate the vitality, purpose, and confidence necessary to sustain real personal change.
💡 Core MoralOvercoming our lower impulses requires continuous vigilance. But resistance alone is exhausting—our deepest strength is unlocked when we ignite our potential for good. We persist in the light until the darkness naturally recedes.
🏕️ Practical Application: The Path of Avraham Avinu
- 🛑 Reject the Void: Envision Avraham standing alone in a society steeped in idolatry and cold self-interest, decisively turning away from its cruelty and corruption.
- ⛺ Build the Sanctuary: Picture him pitching his open tent, replacing the darkness with unwavering faith in HaShem and boundless warmth toward travelers.
- ✨ Ignite the World: Imagine the joy, kindness, and holiness radiating from his home, quietly transforming humanity through the sheer force of goodness.
When striving to grow, do not focus solely on what to eliminate. Choose one clear, joyful act of kindness or spiritual devotion, commit to it consistently, and let that positive momentum carry you forward.
