The Secret of Being Pleasant to HaShem

"Rabbi Chanina ben Dosa says: 'One who is pleasant to his fellow man, is pleasant to HaShem.'" (Pirkei Avot 3:13).

Can there be anything more valuable and gratifying than knowing the secret of how to be "pleasant to HaShem"? In a genuinely "delicious" lesson, Rabbi Chanina ben Dosa reveals the prestige of being "pleasant to HaShem" is attained by "being pleasant to our fellow man!" It is beautiful to reflect on the idea that HaShem chose the attribute of man" being pleasant to his fellow" as the criteria for "man to be pleasant to HaShem!"

The more we are aware of the secret of being "pleasant to HaShem," the more we will be inspired to be pleasant to others. Yet, to be considered "pleasant to others" is not quite as easy as it sounds. Earning the status of "being pleasant to others" requires persistence and perseverance. In the sensitive realm of interpersonal relationships, even one display of insensitivity can compromise one's status as "a pleasant person." Therefore, to enjoy the honor of "being pleasant to others," we need to be consistently pleasing to every person, in every situation.

Always be as "soft as butter" and as "sweet as honey" to your fellow person, and attain the esteem of being "pleasant to HaShem." Receive His boundless blessings, compassion, and assistance.

Imagine that you are a guest in the tent of Avraham Avinu. Envision Avraham Avinu showering you with joy, warmth, honor, and loving-kindness as he serves you a sumptuous meal. Be inspired to emulate the joy, kindness, and graciousness of Avraham Avinu. Be joyful, kind, and pleasant to your family and friends, and enjoy the merit and delight of being "pleasant to HaShem."

A Clever Person Proceeds With Understanding

“The thoughtless believe every word, but a clever person proceeds with understanding”
(Mishlei 14:15).

Let’s consider the following scenario. Yaacov was intelligent and good-hearted. He asked his friend, Eli advice regarding a certain investment he was considering. Eli, who was unexperienced in business and very opinionated, recommended that Yaacov go forward with the investment because “it sounds like a great deal. Don’t give up the chance of a lifetime!” Based on Eli’s encouragement, Yaacov invested in the deal. Ultimately the investment was a scam, and Yaacov lost $10,000.

Who is responsible for Yaacov’s loss? Was Yaacov foolish for listening to Eli, or was Eli foolish for recommending that Yaacov go for the deal?

Although the importance of taking counsel is well known, King Solomon teaches us that it is essential to use intelligence when taking advice. Primarily, we should avoid taking counsel from unethical or unworldly people. Instead, we should recognise who are the upright people and listen to their wise advice.

Foolish people are unable to take advantage of counsel because they believe whatever is told to them. They do not distinguish between an advisor who offers sincere advice and one whose counsel is tainted, nor do they analyze whether the advice is corrupt or correct.

Conversely, a clever person will not be swayed by immoral counsel. He will hear out his advisors and when the time comes to make his decision he will weigh all of their opinions and proceed on the straight path.

It is true that Eli gave Yaacov irresponsible advice. However, it was Yaacov who elicited the advice from Eli. Yaacov’s shortsighted perspective and lack of good judgment is the real factor that caused his loss.

Reflect on who are the people in your life whom you should rely on for sound advice. If we will use discretion when taking advice, the path of good counsel will be illuminated before us and lead us to wisdom, joy, and success!

The House of Straw \ Parashat Beha'alotcha

Do’eg HaAdomi was the chief judge and the most brilliant Torah sage in the generation of King David. Despite all of his extraordinary qualities, he eventually fell from grace. The Midrash (BaMidbar Rabah 18:17) likens him to a “house full of straw.” As time passes, the straw pokes through the cracks in the walls, revealing the worthless contents of the house. Likewise, the arrogance of Do’eg, rose to the surface for all to see.

What was the “straw” of Do’eg that poked through the holes? Do’eg referred to King David as “ben Yishai,” the son of Yishai, instead of calling him by his first name.

Is this seemingly minor social imperfection sufficient grounds to overturn Do’egs good reputation?

The Torah teaches us the physical symptoms that reveal the state of spiritual purity and impurity. For instance, certain skin blemishes indicate levels of impurity caused by arrogance and slander. Similarly, Do’egs lack of respect for King David was a symptom of his base nature that lay beneath the facade of greatness.

In light of the above lesson, when addressing another person, always use his proper name. Avoid all nicknames or impersonal references.

The slightest misdeed or improper character trait can disrupt our spiritual balance. Remember how Miriam’s few improper words about Moshe, caused her entire body to be covered with tza’arat - a skin disorder.

How do we monitor our inner self, so that we keep track of our spiritual condition? The daily study of Mussar is the antidote to the yetzer hora — the negative impulse. It sensitises us so that we can recognise our flaws. Also, it endows us with the capability and wisdom to cleanse our souls to attain the state of absolute holiness and purity.
