A Clever Person Proceeds With Understanding

“The thoughtless believe every word, but a clever person proceeds with understanding”
(Mishlei 14:15).

Let’s consider the following scenario. Yaacov was intelligent and good-hearted. He asked his friend, Eli advice regarding a certain investment he was considering. Eli, who was unexperienced in business and very opinionated, recommended that Yaacov go forward with the investment because “it sounds like a great deal. Don’t give up the chance of a lifetime!” Based on Eli’s encouragement, Yaacov invested in the deal. Ultimately the investment was a scam, and Yaacov lost $10,000.

Who is responsible for Yaacov’s loss? Was Yaacov foolish for listening to Eli, or was Eli foolish for recommending that Yaacov go for the deal?

Although the importance of taking counsel is well known, King Solomon teaches us that it is essential to use intelligence when taking advice. Primarily, we should avoid taking counsel from unethical or unworldly people. Instead, we should recognise who are the upright people and listen to their wise advice.

Foolish people are unable to take advantage of counsel because they believe whatever is told to them. They do not distinguish between an advisor who offers sincere advice and one whose counsel is tainted, nor do they analyze whether the advice is corrupt or correct.

Conversely, a clever person will not be swayed by immoral counsel. He will hear out his advisors and when the time comes to make his decision he will weigh all of their opinions and proceed on the straight path.

It is true that Eli gave Yaacov irresponsible advice. However, it was Yaacov who elicited the advice from Eli. Yaacov’s shortsighted perspective and lack of good judgment is the real factor that caused his loss.

Reflect on who are the people in your life whom you should rely on for sound advice. If we will use discretion when taking advice, the path of good counsel will be illuminated before us and lead us to wisdom, joy, and success!
