SF - Special Rosh HaShanah Edition -- The Secret Path to Teshuvah

The Secret Path of Teshuvah

As Rosh HaShanah approaches we reflect on how we can improve ourselves in the upcoming year. Yet, when we think about our flaws, sometimes we cannot imagine how we can overcome our more difficult challenges.

However, there is always something we can do to improve! Even the smallest improvement yields powerful results. Every situation can be divided into two parts -- the easy and the difficult. Some aspects of a misdeed are difficult for a person to avoid, while other aspects are easier. In fact, every misdeed has aspects that are easy to avoid.

When we plot out our teshuvah plan, the first step is to isolate the aspects of the misdeed that is easy for us to control. For example, it might be difficult to find time for us to learn Torah during the week. However, on Shabbos, it is "easy" to make time for learning. Therefore, instead of trying to tackle the difficult challenge of learning Torah during the weekdays, we pursue the easy goal of setting time to  learn on Shabbos.

This approach leaves no room for despair! Since we choose to make an improvement which is in our control, it's success is absolutely attainable. We accomplish these achievable improvements, and are encouraged to take on new challenges because we have tasted success.

HaShem considers our improvements as complete repentance, in the easy aspects. Even more, since the person made the effort to master the easy aspects which are in his control, HaShem will help him master the more difficult aspects.

Visualization: Envision Rabbi Akiva going to Yeshiva at age forty, not knowing any Torah, whatsoever. Imagine how difficult and embarrassing it is for him to go to the Yeshiva and learn the basics, like a small child. Each day he overcomes his challenge by telling himself, "All you have to do today is walk into the Beis Midrash." He does what is in his control and enters the Beis Midrash. See him advancing little by little each day in his Torah studies, until ultimately he emerges as an incomparable Torah scholar and illustrious Tzadik.

SF - The Only Worthwhile Goal

The Only Worthwhile Goal

King David said, "One thing I ask of you...to dwell in the house of HaShem all the days of my life." Most people want different things at different stages of their life. A small child enjoys a simple toy, an older child wants a bike. A young man marries and builds a family. Soon after he wants a house and then looks to make his fortune. King David had none of these variations. Indeed, from his earliest years till the end of his life, King David had one singular goal -- "to dwell in the house of HaShem all the days of my life."

Lesson: Crystalize your goals and realize that coming close to HaShem is the only worthwhile pursuit, as well as the ultimate pleasure.

Visualization: Envision King David awakening at midnight and singing praises to HaShem. See how King David seeks to be in HaShem's presence each moment of his life. Every day he enriches his knowledge of HaShem, and as a result the joy of his soul continuously increases.

Rosh Hashaná, Um Dia de Luz

Em Memória de Alter Yossef ben Shmuel, Hanne Bruche bat Hazel, Samuele ben Yossef, Samuel ben Avraham, Regina bat Alter, Braindel bat Shmuel Biniamin e Lea bat Michael Z"L

e-Mussar

Sabedoria para o Crescimento Pessoal

À  LUZ  DO  MUSSÁR

SF - A Message From HaShem

A Message From HaShem

"The hidden things belong to HaShem, our G-d, but the revealed things belong to us and to our children forever, to fulfill all the words of this Torah" (Devarim 30:28). A line of dots appear in the Torah text above the words "to us and to our children". What is the message of this unique symbol? When we write a letter, we underline the important words. The Torah is a love-letter from HaShem to Klal Yisrael. The highlighted words -- "to us and to our children"-- emphasizes the urgency of transmitting the Torah to our children (and\or students).

Lesson: Make your children's Torah education an absolute priority in your life. Do everything in your power to help your children attain an eternal commitment to Torah.

Visualization: Envision Yaacov Avinu teaching Torah to his twelve sons. See how he gathers his children each day, and lovingly teaches them the Torah and its pleasant Mitzvos. Inspire your children to grasp the Torah -- the Tree of Life.
