SF - How to Open the Gates of Heavenly Kindesss \ Parasht Chayei Sara

How to Open the Gates of Heavenly Kindesss \ Parasht Chayei Sara

D'var Torah: "And Yitzchak came from B'er Lechai Ro'ie and he sojourned in the Negev. And Yitzchak went out to pray in the field and he raised his eyes and he saw, and behold, camels were coming" (Bereishis 24:62). HaShem bestows kindness to a person, according to the good deeds of that person. For example, after Sara's demise, Yitzchak went to the Negev in order to bring Hagar back as a wife for Avraham. Many years before, Hagar, Sara's servant, had been banished from Avraham's house. Not only did Yitzchak intend to perform an act of kindness for his father, Yitzchak also intended to amend the pain of Hagar's banishment. Just as Yitzchak acted with kindness here on earth, so too, the kindness of Heaven awakened on his behalf. At the very time he performed this good deed and prayed in the field for HaShem's compassion, Rivka, his soul mate arrived on camelback.

Moral: Yitzchak's great kindness to reunite Avraham and Hagar, awakened HaShem's kindness to flow upon him.  So too, when we act kindly to others, HaShem showers His kindness upon us.

Application: Envision Yitzchak's heart awaken with great kindness to help reunite his widowed father and Hagar. See him travel across the desert to find Hagar. At the same instant that he prays in the field, HaShem orchestrates Rivka's arrival. Just as Yitzchak wanted to bring solace to Avraham and Hagar, HaShem comforted Yitzchak with the joy of meeting his righteous wife. Always act kindly to others, and be assured that HaShem will shower His kindness and compassion upon you.

SF - The Beautiful Kindness of Rivka \ Parasht Chayei Sara

The Beautiful Kindness of Rivka \ Parasht Chayei Sara

D'var Torah: In a beautiful display of loving kindness, Rivka graciously drew water for Eliezer and his camels, when they arrived at the well. As soon as the camels finished drinking, Eliezer gave Rivka the gold jewelry that Avraham sent for Yitzchak's wife to be. Surprisingly, Eliezer gave her the jewelry before verifying her family lineage. What if it turned out that Rivka was not from the patriarchal family? Eliezer knew that Avraham loved kindness so much, that he would invite travelers to his home for a meal, that he didn't even know. What's more, when someone would show kindness to others, Avraham would reward their good deeds with special gifts. In light of this, Eliezer knew that Avraham would agree to give the precious gifts to Rivka as a reward for her amazing kindness, even if she was not from the required lineage to be Yitzchak's wife!

Moral: The attribute of loving kindness, in and of itself, is the clear sign of a spiritual worthy person, and is deserving of special gifts.

Application: Envision Rivka filling her pitcher with water from the well and graciously serving Eliezer, his attendants, and camels. See her joyously run to the well several times to provide them with an abundance of cool water. Imagine Eliezer so amazed by Rivka's kindness, that he is moved to give her the precious gold jewelry. Flow with loving kindness; and praise your friends for performing acts of kindness.

SF - Why Avraham Was Beloved to HaShem \ Parasht Vayira

Why Avraham Was Beloved to HaShem \ Parasht Vayira

D'var Torah: "For I have loved Avraham, because he commands his children and his household that they keep the ways of HaShem" (Bereishis 18:19).
HaShem chose Avraham as the torchbearer to transmit the Torah to future generations. However, the great Yeshiva of Shem and Eiber was already established before Avraham's time. In light of the fact that there were other great tzadikim and prophets in this era, why did HaShem choose Avraham to be the spiritual leader of the world? As great as the other men were, they did not reach out to other people to show them the way of HaShem. Whereas, Avraham dedicated his life to bring his brethren under the wings of the Divine Presence.

Moral: HaShem had special love for Avraham Avinu -- and appointed him to be the spiritual mentor of mankind -- because he cared deeply about HaShem as well as his fellow man.

Application: Envision Avraham Avinu lovingly welcome guests into his tent. See him attend to them with loving-kindness, high honor, and heartfelt joy. As he teaches them the knowledge of HaShem, he conveys to them that HaShem is the One and only Eternal Creator of the Universe. Avraham's warmth and wisdom captures the hearts of his guests. He influences countless numbers of people to walk in the way of HaShem. Emulate Avraham's kindness and be an ambassador of HaShem to the world. Share the good way of HaShem with your fellow man, and help them to uplift their lives.
