The Merit of Compassion
In the test of the Akeidas Yitzchak, HaShem instructed Avraham Avinu to offer Yitzchak, his beloved son, as a sacrifice. Our Sages tell us that on the merit of Avraham complying with HaShem's decree, HaShem overcomes the attribute of justice and shows compassion to Klal Yisrael. We can understand how an act of human mercy awakens Heaven's mercy. But how is it that Avraham's willingness to sacrifice his son awakens HaShem's compassion? When Avraham placed his son on the altar, tears of sadness streamed down his cheeks. Even though Avraham complied with HaShem's will to sacrifice his son, he did not break the bond of his deep-rooted love for Yitzchak. Lesson: Since Avraham stayed rooted to compassion even in a time when he was required to act with severity, his great dedication to compassion awakens HaShem's compassion for Avraham's descendants in every generation. App: Fill your heart and soul with goodness. In every situation do your best to act with unabated compassion, kindness, and love. to view the Salant Mussar Library Collection |
