The Secret of Good Advice \ Proverbs 14:15
D'var Torah: "The thoughtless believe every word, but a clever man proceeds with understanding" (Proverbs 14:15). Although the importance of taking counsel is well known, it is important to use discretion when taking advice. Primarily, one needs to avoid taking counsel from an unworthy or unqualified person. Rather, always seek the counsel of a person who is upright and wise. An impulsive person is unable to take advantage of good counsel because they do not distinguish between a qualified advisor or a foolish one. Whereas, a clever person is not swayed by immoral or unwise advice. He takes counsel with a wise advisor, and proceeds on a straight and successful path.
Moral: If we use good judgement when seeking advice, then the path of goodness will shine before us, and lead us to success.
Application: When you need clarity to help you make a decision, do not be influenced by unsound advice. Choose a wise and virtuous counselor. Intelligently consider his words and apply his advise in the best way for your situation. Follow the upright path to good judgement and success. (Based on the commentary of Rabenu Yonah)
