“Moshe received the Torah from Sinai and transmitted it to Yehoshua” (Pirkei Avot 1:1).
The Torah records in great detail the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. Yet, at the beginning of Pirkei Avot, the Mishnah reiterates that Moshe Rabbeinu received the Torah from Sinai. Why is it necessary to restate this universally accepted truth—that Hashem gave us the Torah at Mount Sinai?
Pirkei Avot does not deal with halachic matters, such as the prohibitions of Shabbat or the laws of kashrut. Rather, it focuses on ethical teachings and character refinement. One might mistakenly assume that these teachings were created by the Rabbis, much like other nations developed their own systems of morality and codes of behavior.
To dispel this misconception, the first Mishnah of Pirkei Avot opens with the statement, “Moshe received the Torah from Sinai.” This teaches us that even the moral teachings of Pirkei Avot were received by Moshe Rabbeinu at Mount Sinai—they are part of the divine Torah.
The ethical teachings of Pirkei Avot are pure Torah. They illuminate our path with goodness, holiness, and righteousness.
Make the study of Pirkei Avot a regular part of your Torah learning. Value its teachings with the same reverence you give to halachic Torah laws. Review its words aloud, with the intention of internalizing their truth and integrating their wisdom into your heart.
Today: Strive to fulfill the ethical guidance of Pirkei Avot—elevating your behavior, refining your character traits, and deepening your love for Hashem.
(Based on the commentary of the Bartenura to Pirkei Avot)
