SF - The Unique Holiness of Chanukah

The Unique Holiness of Chanukah

On Chanukah we recite the She'hech'i'yanu blessing over our lighting of the Menorah. While on all other festivals we recite the She'hech'i'yanu blessing over the day, unrelated to any specific Mitzvah. The reason for this distinction is very profound. Regarding all other festivals the day is inherently holy, whereas the days of Chanukah hold no inherent holiness. Rather, the holiness of Chanukah is generated by our lighting of the Chanukah lights, which are inherently holy. Therefore we say the She'hech'i'yanu blessings over the Chanukah lights.

The holiness of the days of Chanukah is generated by performing the Mitzvah of lighting the Menorah. When our souls are awakened by the holiness of the Chanukah lights, we joyfully recite the She'hech'i'yanu blessing.

Bring holiness into Chanukah by lighting the Chanukah lights. Recognize the holiness of the lights and recite the She'hech'i'yanu blessing with great joy.
May the souls who left this world be remembered for a blessing.
