“That man went up from his city from year to year to worship and serve HaShem in Shilo” (Shmuel). This verse refers to Elkanah the Prophet. The phrase, “That man went up,” implies that Elkanah continuously elevated himself. The Midrash reveals how Elkanah advanced in his spiritual growth. “He elevated himself in his home, he elevated himself in his courtyard, he elevated himself in his city, he elevated himself in all the Land of Israel. All of his elevations were self-motivated.” The beginning of Elkanah’s ascent to holiness began in his relationship with his wife and children, “in his home.” His interpersonal relationships with his family served as fertile ground for Elkanah to develop personal excellence. His pleasing character traits, personal integrity, and purity of spirit built the foundation for him to attain perfection in His Divine Service.
The root of spiritual growth begins by nurturing good virtues, kindness, and sensitivity with our spouse and children. When we relate properly with those closest to us, we are on the path to serve HaShem with dedication, holiness, and joy.
