The Secret of Praying for a Good Livelihood The daily prayer for our livelihood is: "Blessed are You HaShem, Who blesses the years." Let's think about that. We would expect that the prayer would say something like, "Blessed are You HaShem, Who grants us our daily bread." Why is the prayer for livelihood expressed through "blessing the years"? HaShem sends us our livelihood with the intention for us to engage in spiritual pursuits such as acts of kindness, Torah study, prayer and good deeds. Therefore, the prayer for our livelihood originates as a spiritual blessing. HaShem blesses "the years" because time is a spiritual dimension. When man engages in spiritual pursuits, the spiritual blessings give fruit to the material blessings. Lesson: When we dedicate ourselves to fill the days of our lives with goodness, HaShem blesses our years with boundless spiritual and material blessings. Visualization: Envision Yaacov Avinu blessing his children on Friday night at the Shabbos table. Sense the love and sincerity in his heart to convey the blessings of spiritual wealth to his children. Reflect on the fact that HaShem, your merciful, Heavenly Father showers upon continuous, boundless blessings.
