"Rabbi Elazar said, 'A good heart" [is the upright path to which a person should cleave]. (Avos 2:9) Avraham Avinu had a good heart. He invited guests into his tent and served them a sumptuous meal. His golden personality radiated happiness, holiness, and love. Thousands of people were inspired by his sweetness to embrace the Torah and Mitzvos. A good heart is characterized by the golden virtue of patience. A patient person never has a trace of anger and always speaks pleasantly. Even when someone wrongs him he bears it graciously and never says a bad word, for his mouth always emits sweetness and pleasantness. A good deed is relatively easy to do because it is an external action performed by the body. Whereas, a person who has a "good heart" resonates with kindness from the very essence of his being. Strive to have infinite patience and pleasantness in all of your interpersonal relationships. (Based on the commentary of Rabenu Yona to Pirkei Avos) |
