As a result of Klal Yisrael's involvement with the golden calf, they lost the merit to inherit Eretz Yisrael. Even so, HaShem, in His infinite compassion, created an opportunity for them to rectify their sin. He charged them with the Mitzvah to send the spies to Eretz Yisrael. If they would bring a positive report, reflecting their trust in HaShem, they would regain the merit to inherit Eretz Yisrael. Unfortunately, they totally misinterpreted HaShem's good intentions. They assumed that He was sending Klal Yisrael to destruction in Eretz Yisrael as a punishment for their culpability of the golden calf. Therefore, they gave a negative report about Eretz Yisrael which resulted in a desecration of HaShem and a lost opportunity. Regardless of any mistake or misdeed that we make, there is never reason for despair. HaShem, in His great mercy, creates endless opportunities for us to rectify our sins, and will always accept our repentance.
Envision Moshe Rabenu praying for Klal Yisrael after they fell to the sin of the golden calf. See how he persists in pleading with HaShem to reveal new dimension of compassion and forgive Kall Yisrael. Overcome all thoughts of self-doubt with the absolute trust in HaShem's infinite compassion. Strengthen your faith that HaShem accepts, forgives, and loves everyone who returns to Him.
