There is a mitzvah to have a festive meal on Shavuos. Yet, since the holiday commemorates HaShem giving us the Torah, what is the significance of having a festive meal? It would seem more appropriate to celebrate Shavuos by immersing ourselves in Torah study.
The holy Torah sanctifies our material body. Therefore, Klal Yisrael, alone, has the capacity to elevate the material to the spiritual. We partake of a festive meal on Shavuos because we are able to serve and thank HaShem both with our body and our soul. Be aware that the holy Torah elevates our life experience and gives us the capacity to consciously sanctify every we do. (Based on the commentary of Lev Eliyahu to Vaikra 23:21) |
