SF - The World Is Judged With Goodness \ Pirkei Avot

The World Is Judged With Goodness

“Everything is foreseen, yet the freedom of choice is given. The world is judged with goodness, and everything depends on the abundance of good deeds” (Avot 3:19)

Reflecting upon the judgment of HaShem can be intimidating. It is important to realize that HaShem’s judgment is not limited to weighing the deed. If that were the case, most people would be so overwhelmed by their own culpability that they would be incapable of performing repentance.

When a person is young, the passion of youth in combination with his deficiency of Torah knowledge might cause him to act foolishly. When he is more mature and wiser, a person might commit a more serious transgression.

However, the Mishnah says, “The world is judged with goodness!” HaShem judges people with the attribute of goodness and kindness. King David prayed, “The sins of my youth and my transgressions do not remember. According to Your kindness remember me, may You remember me for the sake of Your goodness, HaShem” (Tehillim 25:7).

King David asked HaShem to remember neither the innocent sins of his youth, nor the intentional transgressions of his adulthood. He asked HaShem to look at him with a kind eye, “Do not dwell on the paltry amount of my good deeds, instead, in Your kindness remember me for the sake of Your goodness. Let it be considered before You as if I merited many good deeds — for the world is judged with goodness!”

Regardless of one’s past misconduct, HaShem listens to our prayers and views us with compassion because HaShem is “good to all of His creations.” May this positive perspective of HaShem and His merciful judgement give us the confidence to ascend the holy path of Torah and Mitzvot.

May the souls who left this world be remembered for a blessing.
