“When you draw near to the battle, the Kohen shall approach and speak to the people: ‘Hear, O Israel, today you are approaching the battle against your enemies. Do not be fainthearted, do not fear, do not panic, and do not be terrified of them. For HaShem, your G-d, is the One Who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.’”
The phrase “Hear, O Israel” alludes to the daily declaration of Shema Yisrael, HaShem Elokeinu, HaShem Echad. The Torah teaches that the Jewish army should recite the Shema when going out to war. By declaring the Divine Unity, they awaken the great merit of Klal Yisrael, who faithfully accept G-d’s sovereignty every single day. In this merit, HaShem promises protection from danger and calamity.
Chazal further explain that even if a Jew fulfills only the mitzvah of reciting Shema morning and evening, this alone can serve as a shield and safeguard against enemies.
The Torah itself protects and preserves Klal Yisrael. The Shema is always on our lips, and its merit is sufficient to shield us and bring salvation—especially in times of distress.
Today: - Internalize that the prayer of Shema Yisrael is the most powerful weapon in the arsenal of Klal Yisrael.
- When facing the challenges and “battles” of life, declare: Shema Yisrael, HaShem Elokeinu, HaShem Echad.
- Draw strength from the awareness that this affirmation of G-d’s unity brings protection and deliverance for you and for all of Klal Yisrael.
